What about trying one of the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets, such as Venison and Sweet Potato, to see if that helps? At least pumpkin and rice is better than the intestinal stuff my vet always wanted me to feed for a few days. That crap had ethoxyquin in it!!!!!! :eek:

Or, you could homecook or go to raw, which is what we did. I like the raw because there is only one protein source in most formulas. Just don't assume the NV chicken is only chicken, it has turkey in it. We learned that the hard way :rolleyes:

Dwerten - I was considering Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance / Duck & Potato but the Potato could be a problem correct? Their only other alternative is Sweet Potato and Fish :(
NO NO not duck and potato you can do venison and sweet potato as the duck has white potato

We went through these GI upsets for months and months and months with Ranger. He was also on Innova. After ER visits, fluids, tons of Pepto (which works amazingly well, BTW), we figured out that he has a food intolerance to turkey. and the rabbit has chicken in it :( i fed raw for 6 mos in 2005 and not against it but i would try to stick to a limited ingredient diet as not all dogs can tolerate raw

Well the rabbit is also from CHINA which is disgusting in itself and the reason we switched to Primal :)

I absolutely agree- raw is not for everyone and most vets will be adamantly against it, especially considering past GI problems.

I do think the limited ingredient diets, homecooked or raw are the only ways to determine ingredient-specific intolerance.

I think it was Tatumsmom a while back who was having serious gastro problems with little Tatum. She was on Innova also, and if I remember correctly the problems stopped after she quit feeding it. I'll have to go back and search...

Dwerten - So what about Fish and Sweet Potato? would that be Ok to try next?

Amanda - I did consider going raw as well, only thing there is I don't have any idea where to start or what to give since Gucci is so sensitive. I do agree that Pumpkin and Rice is better than some meds the vet would give. Much more natural for him.

As for Gbear He is doing well right now and hasn't had a BM since earlier today.. which is good because for a while it was constant until there was nothing left. Smaller amounts would come out and it was more frequent (which is a symptom of IBD from what I've read). Earlier it was a little less runny and not discolored at all. Hopefully after tonights pumpkin and rice he will be on the mend. I am now asking food suggestions, since it's obviously something going on with his insides.

I also agree with that statement, I have a Bully that eats the Natural Balance and we had to try a few L.I.D before getting it right. She eats the Sweet Potato and Fish ( I think it's Salmon )

I think that will be our next step... trying the Natural Balance. Is there a brand BETTER than Natural Balance?

no i would not do fish and sweet potato as first choice as some have had loose stool on that diet with allergy dogs

Is the Venison and Sweet Potato a Natural Balance brand or other brand? I am so sorry to bother I am just trying to know what to look for tomorrow as I will be buying a different food for G-bear.

yes primal is the better raw diet for sure as a new owner took over nv and not as consciencious is what i am hearing and primal also has grinds and more limited ingredient diets you can add vitamins and veggies to for allergy dogs as do not like cilantro, spirulina and alfalfa for allergy dogs

We put Ranger on the NB Fish and Sweet Potato after the lightbulb clicked in my head that it might possibly be his food triggering all this. I fed that for several months with no issues then went to NV raw, which I didn't like but he had no problems, and finally to Primal raw. I have fed Wellness Core (ocean) with no problems either, as snacks and lunch.

I would try a fish-based diet or something like the venison and sweet potato from NB. Try to get something with none of the same ingredients as the Innova he's on. Talk to Crystal (Ellie May) about IBD, she goes through some seriously hard times with Ellie but has tons of great info. I know it's incredibly hard to diagnose 100%.

Thank you for all the great information, I am going to scramble off and do some research on these threads and hunt down Ellie May tomorrow.

I think I will try the NB first since we have another dog on that and I have some experience with the brand. I am also going to take a list of the innova ingredients and research online. I am also hoping this is resolved soon :( I hate when he has problems like this.

The Wellness has a few LID foods as well so I am going to look them up as well and see which rates higher.

does ellie may consult susan davis as i disagree with susan on the white potato diets she puts ibd dogs on :( and she also puts dogs on turkey diets which i disagree with so that is my concern as i have analyzed ibd to death since my dog has it now for 3 years so this is something i know very well and my dog vomits any white potato and actually my two other dogs do as well and they do not have ibd so not a fan of white potato for dogs and our vet said many dogs cannot tolerate potato as his dogs cannot either and once we kept my dex off white potato diets he has been fine for 3 years but prior to that he was sick for a year costing me 10k in hospitalization for pancreatitis and ibd from excessive vomitting as his is in his small intestines as he never had diarrhea

Diarrhea is a symptom.
The cause of which, is the destruction by a bioinfectious agent that has changed, or by toxicity, destroyed the natural flora in the intestines. Once the flora is no longer active and functioning the intestines both small and large can no longer digest the nutrient content in the food, or finish the water absorbtion process that forms the normal firm stool that most dogs deficate.

So the first order of priority is to re-establish the flora. Pro-biotics either through a natural food selection such as yogurt, or by adding probiotic powder will concentrate on fixing the cause and not just the symptom.

agree BUT alot of dogs are lactose intolerant so i use non dairy probiotics dds plus instead of yogurt for this reason as if the dog is lactose intolerant they will have diarrhea from the yogurt thus not correcting the problem
