Bijou's leg is broken & she in surgery I'm so, so, so upset!!! My 17 yoa daughter was puppy sitting Bijou yesterday evening and she had her on the couch with her and Barley. Well, Barley heard something outside and jumped from the seat to the back of the couch to look out the windows. When he did this Bijou fell off the couch onto her butt on the floor. She cried for a few seconds and then wouldn't stand up. I rushed home from work and the minute I seen her trying to walk to greet me I knew she had to go into the vet's. She was walking on three legs and holding up the back left one. We went to the emergency vet's as our's was closed. X-rays showed a clear break in the tibia and fibula (small bones in the calf area of the leg). They splinted it and said it should heal without incident if we keep her calm. I was up all night with her crying every 15 to 30 minutes in pain. That's with pain medicine in her. She started having diarrhea last night after all this too. I gave her Nutri Cal for puppies both last night and this morning. But her gums were white this am and she's refusing to eat, but will drink water. I rushed her into my vet's and they checked her gums, tempature and vitals. Gums were back to pink and temp/vitals good. They x-rayed her to see how well the e-vet did with setting the leg. My vet said we needed to go to the orthopedic specialist so we went there immediately with the x-rays. The orthopedic surgeon came in to talk to me and was sooooo rude, but Bijou needed surgery so I had to leave her with them. She told me that Bijou would have to stay over night in the emergency vet's (right next to / actually joined to the specialist office) and I said I didn't want that because I know sick dogs come in over there and she's only had two sets of shots. She had the nerve to tell me that since my baby has diarrhea that she could be contagious to the other dogs too as she doesn't know if it's parvo or not. I explained to her for the third time that the diarrhea came on after the injury and meds in the middle of the night. She said well, it could still be contagious. So I said well let's test her for parvo, don't they have some test for that. She said that she doesn't do tests like that there only surgery. WFT!!! So I told her to call Dr. D at my vets at talk with her on Bijou's history. How insane, right?! I'm so glad I took her in on Monday for her puppy check so they at least have a base line with her. I love my vet and would trust her no matter what...the lady hugs you and talks to you until you calm down. When she does surgery or testings she calls you herself to check in and doesn't have the vet techs calling. I've had her call me on Saturdays and Sundays to check on my babies before. I called her office and told the receptionist what was going on and will tell Dr. D all about this went I chat with her today. I'm so beside myself right now. I've told my daughter the horror stories I've read on here with other loved ones and I thought she'd be more careful. I have only sat on the couch with Bijou as I held her for a cuddle time and to play I sit on the floor with her and Barley. She feels so bad and offered her savings to help pay for Bijou's surgery. She swears she's learned never to do something like this with a baby and all, and I've explained to her that I'm not mad but very upset, and I know accidents happen, but that was why I warned her before. She promises she's learned from this and will be a better protector of Bijou so I told her we'll have to pray hard for Bijou to make it through surgery and be ok. But I'm still so disappointed and hurt that this happened. I'm really trying to be supportive of my daughter but make sure she learns from this too. I'm I being too hard? I'm hurting for my little puppy so much. It's not fair that she's going through all this and is in so much pain. She's so little and so sweet. I just don't understand why these types of things happen to good people. I don't lie, cheat or steal. I lock those type of people up and this is the thanks God gives me for doing his dirty work in this world? How is this a fair world and why should I continue to stick my neck out for others if nothing good comes back to me? If Bijou lives through the surgery I'll have some faith again. Please, pray for my little baby. We need it right now. |
Sending prayers for your baby and for you ;) |
Thank you!!! We need it, tons of it!!! I'll update as soon as the surgeon calls me, for now I'm trying to stay busy on here to keep from crying so much. |
Sending healing hugs all around, it sounds like you are all hurting from the experience. Let us know how surgery goes. :animal36 |
I pray that everything works out okay. Don't be too hard on your daughter. I went through something similar to this when Ellie broke her leg. My son was trying to bring her in from outside and dropped her. He felt really bad too. |
Oh no...I am so sorry but thank goodness you are her mom so you knew to rush her to the vets. Take a couple of deeeeeep breaths and turn off the thoughts. I am sure your daughter is beside herself over this and I am sure if she could do it over again she never would have had her on the couch. Big Hugs and you and Bijou and your daughter will get through this. |
I'm so sorry. Fancy & I are sending you lots of :hands:'s and 's. Please keep us updated. |
I'm so sorry your baby is injured! Please don't be too hard on your daughter, it sounds like she's already learned an important lesson, and unfortunately accidents do happen.. I'll be praying for a successful surgery. Please give us an update when you can. |
Sending prayers that Bijou will pull through the surgery with no complications and be on his way back to good health. I'm sure it is troubling your daughter that this happened while he was in your care so please don't be too hard on her.. big hugs, |
Thank you all so much for being here for me! I know it was an accident and I know my daughter's hurting too which is why I'm venting to you all. She's such a great kid and we have an amazing relationship (according to those that know us) so I couldn't believe this happened with all my warnings. Can you believe my sister actually thinks I should ground my daughter for this?! I was like...why, it was an accident and I never said it was a rule or anything. See her puppy jumped off the couch in July and broke it's leg. I don't want my daughter to feel too badly, but learn from this. You know? I hope to hear something soon. Will post as soon as I hear anything. Q: I've taken off work tomorrow as well to be home with her. My daughter will be here Friday as I have appointments that I have to keep at work. How long do you all usually stay home with your baby's after such surgery? I'm off all weekend too. |
Hugs your way :hands::nursing: and it sounds like you have a wonderful daughter wanting to give you her savings. Accidents happen to good people too. Please let us know how everything goes. |
So Sorry I am so sorry for what has happened. My Lola broke her leg when she was 9 months old and has healed perfectly, she is now almost 4 years. Unfortunately bad things do happen to good people. I believe these things make you a stronger person. I am sure your daughter feels terrible enough without grounding her. Accidents happen. I am sending good wishes your way.:):):) |

I am blessed to have all of you in my life!!! Thank you for understanding my love for my pups. |
I'm so sorry Gennie to hear about baby Bijou! How terrible I pray she will do okay in surgery and have a quick recovery! :( I can't imagine how scary this must be for you but you were so quick to bring her in and have her checked I bet she will be just fine and back to being a pup in no time. I'm here if you need to chat! |
So sorry..... I am so sorry you are going through all this. We all know your daughter didn't do this on purpose, and must be hurting inside. Our babies like to jump off of things, and run around. It will happen to us at some time, even tho it will break our hearts. I am a retired, so I am able to stay home with mine if something like this should happen. Praying for your baby, your daughter and you. :ghug: :hands: :hands: :hands: |
Ellie had 2 pins put in her leg. After they were taken out, she seemed fine. Can you believe that she actually wanted to run and play while she had them in? Anyway, now you can't even tell that she ever had anything happen to her leg. I am praying that you get an update soon. |
I am so sorry. A few months ago Ella jumped off my bed and hurt her leg. We took her to the vet and thank god it wasn't broken. She gave her pain medication and it helped. Although, she couldn't walk on it for about a month. It's been about four months and she has just fully recovered. Hope everything goes well in the surgery. :) |
I was advised to get Moses leg pinned and plated when he broke it in the same place. Unfortunately, I could not afford that surgery and had them set it. It ended up having to be amputated as that type of break rarely heals with just a cast. Now it has been 2 months since he lost his leg and he is just the most happy puppy. Runs, plays, dances on his hind legs. What I am trying to say is, it will only seem like the end of the world if the surgery is not successful and they have to remove her leg. She will recover and get along just fine without it. I keep asking Mosey where's his leg and he just looks at me!! He is a sweetie and he is just fine and yours will be too. |
Oh I am so sorry you all are going through this :(:(!! You are such a wonderful mommy and I know that Bijou will be really taken care of while she is healing. I know how truly excited and happy you were to have her in your life and this must be killing you. Unfortunately accidents happen and your daughter will be extra careful now because of this. It was a hard way to learn a lesson though and I feel really sorry for her that she had to learn that way :(. You rescued Bijou and gave her a wonderful home, please try to focus on all of the many wonderful happy days that you both have ahead of you together and remember that this will pass. I am sending hugs and prayers your way for all of you :hearts-xx:hearts-xx:love-hug1:love-hug1:love-hug1. |
Thank you Thanks everyone! Your stories help me realize this is the best option for her and the prayers help me feel she'll be ok. The surgeon called at 4:30 and advised they were just then taking her into surgery! I'm not happy about that as she's been there for four or more hours without surgery and they may have to take her to the e-vet for over night monitoring since it's so late now. I'm so disappointed in their customer service skills over there. |
Oh my I just can't believe all this. I am sooo sorry for you all. I wish there was something I could do. I will pray that she makes it through surgery. If you need to talk please give me a call. If you need someone to watch her in the day I don't work and I would be glad to help. Hugs and Yorkie Kisses Yvonne, Tinkerbell & Ginger |
I'm so sorry about Baby Bijou!!!! Obviously your daughter did mean for her to get hurt, but being on the sofa should definitely not be allowed without some type of ramp so she doesn't jump off again. Sending my prayers that the surgery goes well and she heals quickly and completely. As far as staying overnite, I know it isn't the best option, but she will probably still be under the effects of anesthesia for a while and they can also monitor pain levels. |
I hope & pray that Bijou makes a quick recovery after her surgery. |

I worked for a vet orthopedic surgeon for over 2 years so if you have any questions please feel free to ask and i can try to help you out. Its good that she is having surgery done by an orthopedic surgeon. From my experience ER doctors are good at what they do in emergencies but just like regular vets they cannot set fractures. The ones that worked at the place i did (sounds like the same type of set up where your girl is) were great vets and very kind but you could totally tell the difference between a ER splint and a orthopedic splint. So Bijou is in great hands. i'm sorry she didn't go into surgery until late in the day but unfortunately that's the way it is. The surgeon has surgeries that are booked each day so non-life threatening same days or transfers (from overnight er) get done last. Booked appointments and life threatening surgeries have priority, at least that's the way it was at my place. I'm sure you'll hear from the vet real soon and Bijou will be in recovery. Its best that she is staying overnight because i'm sure she'll be on great pain meds and IV fluids. Since she's young and tiny she needs to be monitored 24/7 after a major surgery like that. |
I am keeping Bijou in my prayers. I think your dtr feels bad enough, grounding won't help. She can help watch her when you can't and help in other ways that will make her feel better and you. |
I am sooo sorry this has happened to you! We are dealing with a break too. This babies are so fragile, even the most careful person can have accidents. I thought we were doing everything right and we still have a broken foot. I will be praying for your little Bijou and I am sure she will recover wonderfully. She is very loved!!! Ashlee and Fiona |
Poor baby :( Hopefully surgery had been started and you will have some good news very soon. I just wanted to answer your questions about infection from the surgery. Having any foreign object (pins) placed into the body always runs a slight risk of infection. When I had my ortho surgery for my break this is the exact same thing I was told was a possibility for me as well. After my surgery I opted to stay over night because I wanted to make sure that I was pumped up with plenty of antibiotics and my pain was under control. These same things care a standard of care whether doggies or people so she is in very good hands spending the night. I will be watching for updates :( |
I am SOO sorry about your baby! I am sure your daughter is feeling much worse than any punishment can be given to her. You have to think that although this is bad enough someone had to be watching over her as she could've just as easily landed on her head. Give her kisses from us when you bring her home :) |
Not sure if you saw this thread or not but down the road you will need steps or ramps for your little girl. My little 3# girl runs up and down the stairs all the time. So does my 15# Yorkie wannabe..:D http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ramp-alex.html Make sure you give us an update... I am sure they have been watching her closely and they have her on pain meds. I would also guess they have overnight staff and this really is the best place for her just after surgery. |
Oh poor Bijou, I am so sorry this happened to her :( Sending healing thoughts for a speedy recovery, Hugs! |
