Shorty carrying rt. hind leg Hi! I'm hoping for advice. My 5 yr old male yorkie - Shorty - has been carrying his rt. hind leg for 3 weeks. The vet has x-rayed and examined him and found nothing. The vet has him on anti-inflammatories (Metacam), and Torbutrol, an opiate. Shorty shows no sign of pain. I don't know where to turn. I live in central Florida. Do I need a specialist? Any help or advice would be so appreciated!

I had a similar experence with Buddy last month. When I returned from work in the pm he was carrying his front leg up and when it was no better in the am off to the vet we went. The first thing she checked for was LYMES. Did your vet take a blood sample for Lymes? Lameness is a sign. If not have one done. He tested negative for Lymes. It turned out he had a soft tissue injury and got an injection of Megacam also and oral megacam for 1wk. He was fine that evening after the shot. Good luck.

Shorty is no better Thanks Archie, Shorty also had the injection and has been on the antinflammatory for two weeks - he is exactly the same. I appreciate the reply

I was wondering. Did they zoom in on the ball of Shorty's femur when they examined his x-ray? Zaccheus was holding his right rear leg up and was in a lot of pain, even with Metacam. His first x-ray looked almost normal, until the vet zoomed in to view the femoral head. When it was zoomed in really closely, you could see the beginning of the deterioration. It was only a few weeks later that he required surgery. Just wondering...

Shorty is not any better - I think it's time to go to the specialist.. I can't stand to see him limping around like this... Happily - he doesn't appear to be in pain. Thanks for the good thoughts

I think he did look at the ball of the femur, because he talked about Leg-Perthe? He said he saw no sign of deterioration.
