| Belle broke her leg I'm devastated. She was out for the last pee break of the evening and her sister was staying with us. They were tussling over a stick and off she went from the single step on the deck and fell badly. We went to the emergency vet and here it is a holiday weekend, so I am awake now waiting for a referral to an orthopaedic unit somewhere in the UK that is open and doing surgery on this weekend. She has broken the fibula and caused damage to the elbow joint and has been away from us last night on pain killers and in a stabalising bandage. She was so brave, but I feel sick all of the time thinking I should have not let them play |

| So sorry to hear about your baby. What a terrible way to start the weekend. Don't blame yourself for her accident, you have to let them run and play. I hope you both get to feeling better soon. |

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | I know how you feel. My baby Max broke both of his front legs at the end of December. I did not take Max to an orthopedic surgeon, but rather my vet thought that she could take care of Max. The problem was that she didn't have experience in treating breaks in a dog that was as small as Max, he only weighs 2 lb 9 oz and is now 14 months old. The breaks never healed and he actually developed gangarine. I have now found an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in small dogs and Max's surgery is scheduled for June 1. If anything like this happens again, I will not bring him to the vet but rather the surgeon. Don't panic if you can't get into a surgeon until after the weekend. Just keep him from trying to run around, keep him warm, and give him lots of love. Keep us posted.. Cindy |

| Thanks for your thoughts, my heart is so heavy. They love to play, they had been tussling all evening and I was getting ready to settle them down. It's just horrible bad luck. Having only lost Tink to old age in Feb, I feel like we aren't getting a fair shot <shakes fist skyward>. I couldn't see my usual vet, I say usual because it's the only vet that knows her. But since I was unable to decipher the terrible answerphone message and the number I *thought* it said just rang out, there is little doubt I will be moving. She was comfortable last night when the vet called me to tell me the results of the xray, she was also sedated. I went to my "old" vet practice that I used to go to for Tinkerbelle. They are a little further away, but they have a full emergency service for cover. There was a vet with an interest in orthopaedics at the surgery, but is out for the holiday and I'm sure that first aid will be ok until Tuesday, but I want her healing process to start right away. She needs surgery for that and since I have a choice to get to a specialists center (there are 2 they recommend - depends on the weekend cover), then I guess I will take it. It's not likely that I can get them to come to us. I will know more in an hour or so when the day vet comes on duty and starts the referral process. Last edited by Tinksmum; 05-22-2009 at 10:53 PM. | Bluebelle just came out of surgery, the surgeon called and she is doing well. She has damaged the elbow joint and the pin and screw that were put in brought them together nicely. She will be back with us all being well on Tuesday. Rest, rest, rest for 4 weeks and she gets re-assessed then to start exercising. Thank goodness. |

| Sorry to hear about the break. Seems like she's resting and keeping fingers crossed she will heal well and return to a playful little one. I am curious about the holiday you mention. Here in the US, this weekend is Memorial Day. What holiday are you celebrating?

| So sorry to hear about your babies leg, but so glad the surgeon was able to repair it. With rest and healing hopefully she will be fine. Don't blame yourself, accidents happen. Hopefully you can rest better now knowing she is doing well and will be home very soon.

| Bless your heart. Its like when it rains it pours. We have gone through just about everything with ours. At least now your on an upward swing. She will do fine. We had a schnauzer that broke his back leg in 2 places and our vet got an orthopedic surgeon to do the surgery and he did fine. These little ones are hard to keep down. Just don't blame yourself. Accidents just happen unfortunately. |

| Thanks for all your well wishes, they called this morning and said she is very cheerful She hasn't used the leg yet, but he is expecting that. Almost certainly she is back with us on Tuesday. Now I have to proof my home any real movement! Quote:
