| Too late to save her Thank you all for the condolences. It is horrible, but I would've hated for her to experience anymore pain than she already had. I got her for my birthday February 1st and we actually had to take her to the emergency vet 26 days later, which was just the first of many vet visits. We did not know anything at that time and the emergency vet did not check for liver shunt either. Unfortunately, the contract we have did not specify anything about genetic conditions. Boy, you certainly get an education when things go wrong. Hind sight being what it is, and knowing what we know now, we would have done things quite differently. I am still going to appeal to the people we bought her from and hope their conscience gets the better of them.....or not. The poor little thing was only with us for 129 days! |

| So very sorry to hear of the loss of your little one. My prayers are for you that your heart may heal quickly. The breeder should be informed, and many pups don't show any symptoms. Her dogs need to be spayed and neutered, never bred again in order to stop this genetic crap from continuing. The litter your pup came from needs to be spayed and neutered, whether or not they are showing symptoms. If you have AKC papers, they may be interested in knowing of her breeding practices.

| So sorry to hear about your baby. My "granddog" had seizures also and lived a couple of years with them. It was terrible. As heartbreaking as it was to lose your baby so soon, she does not have to suffer anymore. I hope your heart will begin to mend soon. |

oh and sadly just as you experienced most vets are not real knowledgeable about liver shunt and why it is important to deal with a vet that is very experienced with yorkie breed as yorkies and maltese have a high potential of liver shunt mvd. My girl is mvd and at 3 when switching vets for 3rd time was the first vet that even mentioned it to me due to her skin issues as could be tied to liver and since doing meds wanted her liver checked. She had no other symptoms of liver shunt/mvd so no one ever thought to bile acid test her but this vet requires all yorkies and maltese to be bile acid tested Last edited by dwerten; 06-12-2009 at 01:46 AM. | |

| My first yorkie had seizures. Turned out to be thyroid and they gave him meds and he did fine. Then, my first foster had seizures. He would have at least one a day and sometimes 2. They were horrible. I worked with our rescue vet but was also taking Harley to my vet to be sure everyone was agreeing with what was going on. Both vets did the bile acid tests and came to the same conclusion. He is epeleptic and takes phenobarbitol. I have to take him in every 6 months to be sure he isn't having side affects from the meds. Oh, and yes, I did adopt Harley. He was soooo sick when I got him and after getting him healthy, I had spoiled him rotten in the process, I just had to keep him. He very rarely has a seizure now. I can't remember the last one that he had. Thank goodness both of my experiences have been easily treated. Good luck to you in finding the root of your babies seizures. |
