Help!! Stent surgery for collapsing trachea! Hi All, Cole's trachea collapse has progressively gotten worse and worse to the point where we have tried everything to treat him medically. Surgery is the last and only option, which I plan to go through with this Tuesday because this is currently not the quality of life that Cole should be living. He is my baby and I am so scared and upset as I hear the stent surgery is generally successful at first, but has many complications. Any additional info that can be provided would be greatly appreciated!

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Unfortunately, I have no information to help. Just sending my best wishes for Cole. What a great thing for you to do for him. He's gonna be a happier boy because of it. Once things settle down, please send us updates. This is something that more of us, including me, may be considering some day.

I have no choice but to go through with the surgery. I have tried all the medical options which have all been unsuccessful. The last thing in the world I want is to loose my baby, but this is no way for him to live. Struggling for air everytime he takes a breath. It isn't fair to him and I just can't bear to see him in so much pain. I know its a risky surgery due to the post surgery complications, but I have to give it a shot. It's his last chance.

Can I ask if cole is overweight... my reason for asking is a friend of mine had problems with her yorkie also.. she was overweight.. and putting her on diet food and her losing two pounds has made a complete difference in her.. I am sorry you are dealing with this.. so scary for our babies.. praying what ever you do.. works.. hugs.. anne

Thank you so much for your concern. Cole is not overweight at all (only 3.5 lbs!) but that is a very valid issue with alot of these trachea cases.

UPDATE!!! Cole had his stent placed for his collapsing trachea a little over 4 weeks ago. I am happy to say he is doing GREAT! He has a little cough but I can't believe how much his quality of life has improved! I realize the recovery process can vary greatly, but I have to say this is the best decision I have ever made. I have read alot of comments regarding this surgery and realize there is quite a bit of negativity surrounding it. Cole was at a point where all the medical options had been exhausted and this was the last option before putting him to sleep. As much as I would love for him to live another 15 years, I realize that even another 15 days would be a better than had I not chose to have the stent placed. Cole and I could not be happier with the results so far.
