Yorkie Yakker | Skin problems Please help me, I have a Yorkie 18 months old, he has very dry skin and he is scratching a lot. i have taken him to 2 different vets, with no good results. first he was misdiagnosed with food allergies by the first one, the second one told me he was too young for food allergies at that time he was 8 months old Then I took him back and he was diagnose with allergies to flees, he hardly gets them, since he is most of the time inside, and we spray the yard every day with Down dish soap, since I stop applying the flee medication to him, because he got like pimples en the skin 2 times right after applying to him Unfortunelly I live in McAllen Texas, and we don't have a lot of vet options, and the two vets I have taking him, are in two different address but they work together. I just don't feel they really care, and I have allergies my self and I know how miserable I fell, I really like to help him, wish to know how. We have change his food many many times, he is a picky eater. My sister owns his father and mother, and they are very healthy dogs, why mine is like this? I use only the shampoo the vet recommend for him Please help me! Thanks, Gina |

| i may not be much help but what kind of shampoo ARE you using? My dog had a skin issue after we bought him. It didnt start right away but he was so dry and always itching, I noticed some greyish spots on his thigh and top of his head. He had a skin graph done (you should maybe) and the 1st vet said nothing. I went to my current vet months later when his hair became very thin and he just did NOT look healthy. They also did a skin graph and told me right away that he has Dermodex. They said that there were mites that never were killed off and pretty much burned his skin. They gave him cream that was applied. They also gave us a shampoo to use Relief Shampoo: Pet Shampoo, Shampoo for Cats & Dogs - 1800PetMeds (similar) Epi Soothe Shampoo For Cats, Dogs & Horses: Pet Shampoo - 1800PetMeds (simialr) I dont have the shampoos with me but these look similar to what we were perscribed. Im not saying that yours has what ours had but there are some shampoos that will help. Also a skin scraping may be able to make sure he dosnt have some kind of skin disease. Have you tried giving him childrens benadryl for his allergies? Also adding flax seed to his food made a HUGE difference for ours!

YT 3000 Club Member | chester has enviromental allergies pollens etc, he has very sensitive skin, usually if they give temaril p which is prednisone and benadyrl which I give him if he is really bad, if it is a food allergy the prednisone wont help if the prednisone helps it is pollens etc. Chester has very sensitive skin, I use free all and clear laundry soap and no dyes in the dryer sheets since he sleeps with me. I use salmon oil on his wet food and that helps the allergies it helps with the inflamation. Try a food that has no corn, wheat or soy they are the biggest allergens for food allergies. I use tearless puppy shampoo for his bathing. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What is the skin like? Skin issues are only caused by either allergies or are secondary to disease. The tough part about allergies is truly figuring out if it is food or environmental/seasonal. Do you know for sure which it is?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You could try Neem Oil (topical) as a flea repellent. For skin/coat - I'd highly recommend Ark Naturals Royal Coat.

| Try to bath every other week, and no conditioner. Get a newborn onesie and cut to fit to make a shirt for him. This will sorta protect his skin. Stop feeding Beneful. Instead find a brand that is made for sensitive skin and that doesn't contain corn or by products. Add fish oil and Vit E to his diet. You can also get some oral Aloe Vera Gel to add to his food (from the Vitamin Store). |

The oral Aloe Vera Gel - I get from the Vitamin Shoppe. I give 1/4 teaspoon daily. It is suppose to help and heal from the inside out.

I give 1/2 fish oil daily and 100iu of Vit E and the 1/4 tps of Aloe Vera. Right now the environmental allergies are bad, so Roxy keeps her cotton shirt on (the protect her skin from her scratching it raw) and I do have to give her 1/2 children chewable benedryl from time to time. Also, the clothing detergent I use is Free of Dye and Fragrance and I do not use fabric softener either and I vaccum and dust every week. Sometimes, you can only do so much
