Wylie has Hypothyroid, Pyoderma, and maybe Cushing's Disease

...you are right though, some of the itchy dry skin is from allergies and some is secondary to a disease. Roxy does have environmental allergies, however she also has a Liver Issue (MVD) which can also be contributing to her itchy dry skin

Oh Ann just seeing this. I will be praying for precious Wylie and hope that all comes out OK. I know how you are feeling as Izzy is sick but with the dreaded pancreatitis. Sometimes I wonder Ann if it's these tiny ones that get so sick all the time.

MINI UPDATE

Just got back - but Wylie is there for the day . Dr. Bailey (the Internist) was WONDERFUL, just great.

Kellie (Kalina82) had it right -- the doc wants to do an ACTH test (bc it's shorter in duration and for other reasons I just can't recall now) - and then they are also going to do an ultrasound to look at his Adrenal glands -- if they see something really weird on the adrenals, they may aspirate/sample.

She said Wylie's thyroid level was pretty much ZERO - I could not believe this! I asked why he wasn't totally lethargic and she said "dogs just don't read the textbook symptoms (lol) - and they mask all kinds of symptoms very well". I'm just even more upset at his other vet now . She said she does not think the hypothryoid is secondary to the Cushings (if he has it) - that the hypothy. is primary. And this is not a big deal to me, bc it's so easily treated.

She knows some fantastic adrenal surgeons if it comes to that...but she too told me the truth about that surgery. However, she said if the dog is healthy and young and if surgery is an option - she wouldn't hesitate to recommend it in the right case.

She also said dogs present so differently w/ cushings - so even though Wy has no pot belly - she didn't think anything of that, esp. bc I schedule his feedings. I told her about his "muscle wasting" and she said that was very common.

So, we'll see....the results from ACTH will not be available until late this week or on Monday -- but we'll know something from the ultrasound. If the adrenals look fairly good, then it may be pituitary based tumor.

For those curious/wondering about having emergency funds for their pets and how much they should keep aside or whatever - this appt. for today will be btwn $1072-1700. I know, ouch. That Wylie likes to spend his Mama's money.

Oh Ann, I wish they could've given you something more definative sooner. The thyroid issue is very easily treated. Becca's level was pretty much zero when she was diagnosed during a routine checkup - I hadn't noticed anything wrong. Anyway, one pill a day is all she needed for almost 10 years. I will pray that the ultrasound comes back clean. You'll get that information this afternoon? {hugs}

So is it possible that it is simply a thyroid condition, or does that imply that something more serious is causing the thyroid condition? Sorry, I don't know anything about this.

It's possible...but bc of the excessive thirst/peeing, fur loss, skin infection, muscle wasting etc...we have to rule out cushings for sure. I SO HOPE it's only thyroid.

Just came home from school and the first thread i looked for was this one. I figured those were the tests she was going to do. I'm hoping they come out fine and its ruled Hypothyroid.

I loved her text book answer. my internists used to say that too.

Wow 0 thyroid. I hope the test and ultrasound are negative and the thyroid is the culprit. I know with Maya, who I had no insurance on, I was spending close to 1000.00 each month in the beginning, I finally worked it out with the IM specialist that she would do it over the phone based on my evaluation of her and only do the absolutley necessary tests. I will keep him in my prayers.

Our prayers go out to you and Whylie. Our Krissy cost over 3000.00 before we found it was Cushings. I will pray that it isn't Cushings as it takes its toll on a dog.

Headin' out in a few minutes to pick up my boy. He will be shaved down the middle of his back bc of the ultrasound - I will tell him it's a reverse mohawk and that's it's ALL THE RAGE .

Will update if they give me some info on the US results. Thank you all SO very much for your kindness, support, and knowledge -- geesh, it just makes me feel...I dunno...so much better about all of this, and I feel "hugged" and supported.
