MINI UPDATE
Just got back - but Wylie is there for the day
. Dr. Bailey (the Internist) was WONDERFUL, just great.
Kellie (Kalina82) had it right -- the doc wants to do an ACTH test (bc it's shorter in duration and for other reasons I just can't recall now) - and then they are also going to do an ultrasound to look at his Adrenal glands -- if they see something really weird on the adrenals, they may aspirate/sample.
She said Wylie's thyroid level was pretty much ZERO
- I could not
believe this! I asked why he wasn't totally lethargic and she said "dogs just don't read the textbook symptoms (lol) - and they mask all kinds of symptoms very well". I'm just even more upset at his other vet now
. She said she does not think the hypothryoid is secondary to the Cushings (if he has it) - that the hypothy. is primary. And this is not a big deal to me, bc it's so easily treated.
She knows some fantastic adrenal surgeons if it comes to that...but she too told me the truth about that surgery. However, she said if the dog is healthy and young and if surgery is an option - she wouldn't hesitate to recommend it in the right case.
She also said dogs present so differently w/ cushings - so even though Wy has no pot belly - she didn't think anything of that, esp. bc I schedule his feedings. I told her about his "muscle wasting" and she said that was very common.
So, we'll see....the results from ACTH will not be available until late this week or on Monday
-- but we'll know something from the ultrasound. If the adrenals look fairly good, then it may be pituitary based tumor.
For those curious/wondering about having emergency funds for their pets and how much they should keep aside or whatever - this appt. for today will be btwn $1072-1700. I know, ouch. That Wylie likes to spend his Mama's money.
