Bladder infection? Miss Prissy hasn't been herself the last few days. Mind you she is usually a couch potatoe that has the odd accident when it rains. . . Anyways, she has had one accident each day for THREE days (she even peed in my bed last night--which is a first). She just looks sooo sad. So we are seeing the vet today at 3:30. Is there anything I can do to make her more comforatable in the mean time?

When dogs get urinary tract infections they usually go unnoticed, because bladder infections are localized, and there are rarely signs of infection in other body systems, such as fever or purulent drainage. The symptoms of urinary stress, your dog pacing, whining, walking around in a detached manner, urinating in different areas then normal, are all signs that a UTI could be present. Going to the vet is the best bet. A course of Antibiotics will remedy the infection, and deter other complications such as drug-resistant kidney or prostate infections. Please keep us updated as to how the vet appointment went.

Our vet is so wonderful and was able to fit us in yesterday. Her urine was positive for bacteria and red and white blood cells, so they gave us an anti-biotic (I think it is called clavomax). Miss Prissy is so sad, she peed quite a few times before we went to bed and I was up in the night with her. I let her sleep on top of me starting at about 1:30 in the morning. And the poor baby (ok, she will be 2 years old this summer) peed on me while we were dosing—you think I would learn after she did the same thing the night before! She looks a little less depressed today than she did yesterday.

Clavomax is a combination drug. Part Amoxicillin, which is an antibiotic; and part Clavulanate which inhibits the bacteria from producing an enzyme that renders the Amoxicillin inert. I don't know if the vet spoke to you about side effects, but she might have some. Vomiting and diarrhea are common because of the broad destruction of bacteria both bad and the good in her intestines. You might want to give her some yogurt while she is on this med, as this will help in keeping her intestinal flora intact. So glad that she is doing better. And I do not blame you for keeping her on your bed. She needs all the special attention right now that you can give her, poor thing. Anybody who has had a bladder infection knows what a pain it is. Best wishes for her....

Probiotics with cranberry? They said to give itto her with her food. So far so good--she has had three doses without any issues. I was wondering about breaking open my acedophilis (sp?) and sprinkling them on her food. Thoughts? I take pro-biotics daily because of my yeast and UTI issues. my only thoughts are that I take Natural Factor's Pro-biotics and they do have some cranberry extract in them. Do you think that is ok for yorkies?

I know that cranberries are not an issue for dogs. Some holistic blends have them in their ingredients lists. Acidophilus works wonders when taking antibiotics. I would just research to find out exactly what the milligrams that she would need for her particular weight would be. If I can find anything tonight, I will repost for you.
