oh Gosh Thors, I don't like this. I hope you can get to a GI soon. I really wonder why his sugar is dropping so much though. |
The vet thinks that his sugar dropped because he played so long he forgot to eat, got sick to his stomach and didn't WANT to eat, and then it dropped to the point that it did. He has been ok since the last time I updated. He even barked at the kids when they came home from school. He is also eating like crazy now. I will keep you all posted on him :) It will probably be Monday before I hear from GI though. |

Oh please take this poor baby to a specialist, this is not normal and my heart breaks for him and you. He sounds like he might have a blockage inside his colon.....maybe a narrowing. Your vet needs to get serious about this, just giving him meds isn't fixing the problem. Poor thing. Please keep us posted. Sorry, I just saw where you did take him, I hope that he perks up more and more each day. |
Thanks for the update on Thor. When he had the runny diarrhea did he yelp? I'll pray that he gets better and better each day. |
Well Thor has had 3 big bowel movements today. One Really runny. Two pretty much normal, a little soft, but he has been through a lot the past 2 days. He DID NOT YELP during these bowel movements. Before, no matter the consistency he yelped. He is also officially off the prednisone and butorphanol. He hasn't had it in 2 days. Not sure why he is not yelping, just glad that he isn't. The vet we took him to yesterday said he WAS NOT impacted at all, all the feces he got out was recent, less than a day old (sorry for graphics). NO matter why he ISN"T yelping, we are just GLAD he isn't yelping. He had "family time" with us tonight while we watched recorded American Idol episodes and he was a different puppy. He was active, playing, and acting completely normal. He would go from mine and Rob's laps to playing in the floor with the kids. (we pile pillows up so he can climb to the couch to be with Rob and me.) Lets all just hope that the NON YELPING Thor is here to stay. |
I'm hoping and praying that the yelping will stop forever...but still take him to the GI specialist anyway. He must eat frequent small meals to keep his sugar up...and always eat something before going to bed. When you said a barium test...did you mean a colon x-ray or an upper GI? I am assuming it's a barium colon x-ray, where they force barium in through the rectum, as opposed to through the mouth for an upper GI. I would imagine that they would have to keep him over night for the prep, as he will have to be fasting and the bowels empty. This may be dangerous for you to do at home, because of the risk of low blood sugar. Sure do wish him well...the specialist will know how to handle such a tiny little guy. |

Wow that was horrible to watch. I've never heard a dog make those kinds of noises. It's is wonderful that he is doing better. If you still have problems with him getting constipated you should ask your vet for some lactalose because it will make the poop come out right after he eats and it will be soft, not hard. I hope he continues to get better...he is adorable! |
Hey Sharon just a thought. Could this possibly be due to when he was impacted at 6 weeks. The pain he had made him scared to go so he was crying expecting it to hurt. Now that he's had a few loose stools and it didn't hurt him, maybe he is not so afraid now? Tell me I not reaching for straws, lol. Well ya never know |
No Jemma, you aren't reaching for straws. The vet thought the same thing and thats why he had him on foods that would hopefully give him diarrhea (ex. Can foods, adult dog food, people food). It DID make it soft but did not make a difference in the sounds :( As for today, He had 2 BMs and yelped ONE time with each of them. Kind of how a kid, or us even, would yelp if we had hemmoroids or something. It was just a quick OUCH kind of yelp and he got the job done with no crying. He is acting like a new puppy since early yesterday afternoon. He just acts like he feels SOOO much better. I have him back on the Iams Can food and Science diet kibble. The vet wants him on both so that no matter what he is in the mood for, he will eat. I have a free sample of Wellness puppy on the way (I hope) in the mail and if he eats that then we will be switching him to that puppy food to see how his system handles it. I KNOW that a natural diet is what he needs. He needs less chemicals, less BMs, and less unwanted stuff in other foods. |
Oh my gosh broke my heart to see poor little thor like this. I just got to see this post and don't know if anyone sugested this, but when we first took Gizmo home he started crying not as bad as Thor but was shaking and crying before pooping poor little thing, the vet checked and the poor baby had an irritated anus he was all red poor baby, therefore the pain and crying she gave him some cream called panolog which I applied to the area 2 times a day for 14 days and no more crying. If I see that he is getting irritated there again I'll just apply a little more and it does the trick. I'm in Canada so don't know if you have the same meds there but it's mystatin neomycin sulfate thiostrepton tiamcinolone acetonide the company that makes it is Novartis. Hope this helps and there is no more yelping for little Thor xo |
I know this is probably stupid, but has it occurred to the vet that maybe it's just what Thor does? I mean maybe he's not in pain, maybe he's just odd. LOL There is no bleeding, normal poops, he eats fine. Maybe he is just too young to realize what is going on 'down there' when he goes or something weird like that. Maybe he's mad he need to take time out of playing to go to the bathroom. I know, probably stupid of me to even think that but I have read this whole thread and watched the video... it IS heartbreaking, I never heard noises like that from a dog.... but maybe its just him not liking to go. Nothing more, nothing less. I dunno. I keep praying though that he stops doing that and does not appear in pain anymore. I'd get the ultrasound done just to make sure there is no narrowing in his intestines and no blockages anywhere. That would be the last resort to look for. |
I'm just now seeing this thread. I'm so sorry to hear what you and little Thor have been going through. I will keep you in my prayers that a solution is found quickly!! |
