First. I want to tell you how very sorry I am that your baby is going through this. There must be some sort of stricture, stenosis or even a fissure. I know he is only a baby, but do they do endoscopes on puppies? Or do they have to do an exploratory surgery to check his bowels? I know they do upper GI scopes/EGD's but what about colonoscopy, of course it would have to be very tiny...
What is the term...where a dog's intestine gets twisted? Inter...something?
My suggestion, if an endoscope is not possible...how about a barium colon x-ray? There has to be a way to find out why it hurts Thor so much to poop...and I'm wondering if his bout of constipation as a new born isn't a clue???

sorry ur little fellow is not well and i am sure for your it is also nerve wrecking experience with ur little one...just a suggestion incase it has been over looked but could it be irritated bowel syndrome or colitis due to stress as u mentioned it seemed to subside some with the predisone...

I have seen similar in a dog a friend was bby sitting and he had colitis ...did not want to go and when he did it was water with a little poopie and painful too wimpering when he went ...u may consider a little teaspoon of yogurt daily as a treat and also a small piece of bran bread about a 1/2 inch square ...it did help that dog !

I am just seeing this now and wanted to tell you that I think you are a wonderful mommy to your puppy. That video was so hard to watch, but with all the good advice given here I am sure you will find a cure. Maybe you could consider preparing your own food for him. It is so comforting to know exactly what they are getting is natural, fresh and healthy with no additives or preservatives. They poop less, it is not as smelly and the difference in their general health and coats are amazing.

I know this is going to sound crazy but please try it, my daughter was 2 years old and potty trained , grampa decided to share a can of peanuts with her and she got sooo sooo constipated I had to take her to the emergency room, I want you to know I live in Boston, Childrens Hospital Boston is a renowned hosptial where people come from all over the world. Well after this episode she was psycolgicly constipated, and acted similar to your dog even tho it really didnt hurt her any more , it was AWEFUL , and she too pooped several times a day only releasing a little bit at a time causing her to have to go more, she associated pooping wth PAIN... okay well I saw a specialist at childrens because it was torture watching her try to poop The Dr suggested Mineral oil, she was 2 and I had to give her 2 table spoons of mineral oil each day, what this does is make the poop slide out, there is no pushing involved and if there is a small blockage of hard poop it will soften it and make it come out easliy after it absorbs the oil, its all natural and it cant hurt him( well get more advise from someone on here), I tihnk you should try it, it was just in her mind that it would hurt again so after a few weeks of it sliding out and no pain associated with pooping she was fine... I have no idea what the recommended dosage would be for a puppy but maybe you could try 4 or 5 drops, it has no taste at all maybe mix it with yogurt. Maybe someone on here can tell you if mineral oil can be used on dogs, but I swear this really helped her!

Let me know if they answer you. I go in there on Tues. and will say something if they haven't. Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Yes ! Vets used to recommend the use mineral oil for dogs that were constipated..for the smaller pup i would jsut give a drizzle on the food maybe approx. 1/4 teaspoon or less...rule of thumb try a little and see then u can always increase once u see results ...

I would not put it on his food because you would not be sure it was all eaten, my doctor told me to put it in something I was sure she would finish , so I put it in orange juice and made sure she drank the whole thing..

Mineral oil is a fantastic idea and worth a try. They use it in humans all the time. Start with a small amount and increase as needed. I worry about the long term effects of the meds he's on now, even though they seem to be helping, he can't stay on these forever. Thoughts and prayers still coming your way from Winston and I!!!

Could it be that this poor baby is impacted? I know this happens in people and can be a result of him holding it becasue he is afraid of pooping due to his constipation as a puppy. The longer he holds it in, the more liquid his body absorbs form it, making it drier and more difficult to pass.
I used to care for elderly patients who had this happen. It seems in the video that he only passed a tiny piece, which is a symptom, and the brown fluid that you mentioned is also a symptom. The fluid builds up behind the solid mass in an attempt to "push" it out.
I would be uncomfortable giving anything not advised by a vet, mineral oil or otherwise, if this baby has any kind of intestinal problem, (which it appears so) that could make it worse.

You know now that you mention it...maybe mineral oil is not a wise choice, without a vet's consent. Maybe just a tiny bit of lubrication in the rectum done by a vet...to physically feel for an impaction. I don't know he's so tiny, but there has to be a way to see or feel inside him...

Ok....None of the vets could help. Finally heard back from MedVet in Memphis and the tests alone were going to be 2000$, that didn't count treatment. We have decided to try a natural diet as our next step and called the vet for a recipe for that.

So he has him on
1 lb turkey
1 big tub cottage cheese
6 tbs sugar
2 tbs oil
1.5 c prepared cream of wheat
2 boiled eggs
And a daily vitamin supplement

I made this tonight, it is enough for 8 days so its not too expensive (about a dollar a day). We gave him a little taste of it and he went nuts for it!


I am going to upload a video of him soon so that you can all see...he is feeling better with just the meds :) Hopefully we can get him through this.
