| Please help with my Yorkie's major skin problem! My Yorkie is now 10 months old and I am sure that if I put a pic of him on this site you will all want to cry! He has the worst skin problem I have ever seen on a dog. I have already spent thousands on Vets but can not seem to get the correct medication for him. I am buying pre cooked food for him at the Vetshop that has no preservatives in and is specially prepared for allergic dogs. He had a very big hip operation about two months ago and after that his, then flaky and a little bit irritated skin, just flamed up into something completely uncontrollable. The last time I took him to the vet, after his hair was falling out in clumps and I started to get sores on my own body, he was diagnosed with ringworm. I am just not convinced that it is ringworm. The type of sores that I got from him was not your typical ringworm. It forms a little bump with a blister and it itches a lot. When you scratch it it eventually forms a sore with scabs on it. He has now lost almost all his hair and he really looks terrible. Does anyone firstly know what I could do, or know of a good vet in Cape Town South Africa that specializes in skin problem. I am very desperate! Please help us! |

| Do you have Vet Dermatologists in your area of South Africa? Piccolo had skin issues that could not be diagnosed by her regular vet. This type of vet can do skin scrapings and biopsies. Speaking from experience with Piccolo, it really can save you lots of agony, getting the correct diagnosis quickly. Just want to wish you the best of luck getting things solved for your furbaby.

Donating YT Addict | Skin Problem Arf-Arf Lichen! I too got a bad skin problem. I think I got it after my BARK THE VOTE 8300 mile tour in October to get humans to vote and visit shelters to help pets in need (Schmitty - Online Shop for Dog Toys, Gifts, Pet Calendar, Greeting Cards & Designer Dog Collars and check out BARK THE VOTE blog and fun vidoes!). I stayed at lots of hotels that use bad chemcials to clean the carpets and stuff. Anyway, just like your pooch, I got scab like blisters all over, a rash and loss of some fur. I got a blood test and my throid was low - which is hyperthyroid - who knew! I was also was more sluggish. So, I'm taking pills for it. It's gonna take a ong time to get my skin better, but I'm on my way. BTW - food is also the #1 problem with skin conditions. so, even though you think you are giving good food - you might want to really read the contents and make sure. I eat boiled organic chicken, veggies like green beans, sweet potatoes, peas and blueberries. So, doulbe chekc the food. Big dog food companies might tell you one thing, but you have to be your pooch's best advocate. Whatever that means! OK, gotta go nap. Hope this helps. Arf-Arf, Schmitty |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes, do a skin scraping as others have said. Also, due to the breaks in the skin - I would be very nervous about a staph infection - which it may have already progressed to. Also - check into pyoderma and see if it sounds like that at all. This sounds just horrible - I feel so bad for your baby!

| Awwww... poor baby! Our Mitzi and then Maggie had serious skin problems too and for years we couldn't figure out what it was. Then our Vet recommended Comfortis instead frontline plus for flea prevention and all of a sudden Maggie's itchies were gone (Mitzi had passed away inthe meanwhile...) Even though we never found a flea on them they both had a severe flea allergie and it is enough if a flea bites one time... |

| My Chip had the same type of skin thing although he did not lose any of his hair. To me it looked almost like Chicken Pox. He would get a little bump with a little blister then that would break and would scab. The vet did a skin biopsy and it was staff. He was put on antibiotics and prednisone. It would go away but always came back somewhere down the line. I guess staph can be hard to get rid of and it can flair up when your immune system is compromised. It got to a point when I notice a couple sores I would call the vet and Chip would start another round of the medication so his skin never got really bad. This was something that we battled the last few years of his life.

| Comfortis really worked well for us too. It kills all the fleas within a half an hour.

| Thanks for all your advice. I took Charmie to a new vet yesterday and I think we are heading on the right track. He doubled his dosage of medicine and suggests that I bath him with special shampoo on day 1, dip him day 2 and give it a rest day 3 and do it all over again. We tested him for Sarcoptic Mites but luckily they were not present! He just has a really bad fungal infection. Shame! We had a whole photo session last night and hopefully I will start seeing an improvement shortly. I just now have to get myself and my daughter to a dermatologist so that we can get cured and not infect Charmie again . I will keep you all posted. |
