| Cricket has possible MVD This is my first post on Yorkie Talk and I can't believe it's because my baby has been diagnosed with possible MVD. This all started when I took her in to my regular vet to be spayed at 6 months. She did the normal blood work before spaying and found Cricket had elevated liver enzymes so she did another blood test after feeding her and had that test sent to a lab which came back with still elevated liver enzymes. My vet then sent us on to South Texas Vet Specialists in San Antonio to be further evaluated. After seeing an Internist and having an ultrasound done, it was determined that Cricket probably did not have PSS but a liver biopsy was necessary. Since we wanted her spayed, they decided to go ahead and spay her and do some exploratory surgery and liver biopsy at the same time. We have just found out that the liver biopsy did show some abnormality and the Dr. said she probably had mild MVD. He said to just keep doing what we are doing and we will have another blood test run in about 2 months. I must tell you that Cricket is 7 months old and weighs 2-1/2 lbs. She has no clinical signs of anything being wrong; she eats good, plays good, urine and poop are great. Right now she is recovering from the major surgery (her whole tummy was cut open and stapled shut), but staples are to be removed in a couple of days and she is already getting back to acting like herself (wanting to play all the time). My regular vet wants me to start feeding her Hills L/D canned food but as of yet, she won't eat it. I would love to hear from others who have had this same problem and what kind of diet you feed your yorkie. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Cali is 3 1/2 years old and was diagnosed at 8 months by a liver biopsy to have a very mild MVD. She was always sick as a puppy but not related to the MVD. The specialist said hers was so mild that she didn't need any treatment, but I do try and watch her protein intake. I feed her California Natural and watch treats as they can be high in protein. Hopefully your baby will do fine. I know others on here have theirs on certain foods and hopefully they will respond.

| Roxy most likely has MVD as well. She has had many BAT done this past year and her post numbers range 60 to 100. She eats a special home made diet that I got from Nutritionist at Cornell University, and she gets supplements to aid her liver, etc... Please join this group: DogLiverDisease : Dog Liver Disease The members are very experienced and can lead you in the right direction has far as food, treats and supplements, etc.... Sorry about all of this, but the good news is that it is managable with proper diet and supplements. She can live a normal and happy life |

| my dd has mild mvd and she had pre 3 and post first was 73, then 56 then 26 on low protein diet purina ha which is a soy based diet and hydrolized. She has never had any symptoms so i just do low protein diet. I am a believer of treat the dog not the blood work as many things can trigger blood work like gall bladder contraction, etc. If no symptoms of liver disease such as head pressing, vomitting, seizures, spaced out after eating, picky eater then I would just do low protein diet and this is what i do for dee dee |

| I am so sorry you are going thru this. I am in a similar situation with Tiki, my 7 month old Yorkie. Had pre-spay bloodwork that showed elevated bile acids, then had bile acid test and her post number is 47. They canceled her spay and we are now trying to decide the next steps in diagnosis. I have gotten a big education and lots of help here on Yorkie Talk from members who have much experience with liver disease, and diagnosis, treatment, diet and important supplements. Check out my thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...disease-6.html, and you will get some very good advice. Seems like I hear of another young one having liver issues practically every day. You have come to the right place to learn how you can help Cricket. Good luck!

| My Yorkie has a liver issue and she gets homecooked food. If your pup doesn't like the canned L/D, you could try Royal Canin LS 14 kibble. This food made my Yorkie very itchy though. In mild cases of liver disease, something like Natural Balance Vegetarian might work. I would have to disagree with the vet that PSS is probably ruled out. Ultrasounds are only 60-80% accurate for this diagnosis... It is good to do a liver biopsy since she was being spayed anyway but I would hesitate to say that it was necessary. The protocol of choice now is a Protein C test and then possibly scintography. What are her bile acids test results? Did the vet put her on Denosyl, lactulose, milk thistle? If the biopsy showed MVD, then it looks like you have your answer. If she is asymptomatic and the vets are confident that there is no shunt, she will probably be just fine. Even if she has an operable shunt, she would likely be fine if she had the surgery to correct it.

| Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support@yahoogroups.com is another good group i learned alot from -- I am on both groups and they are very helpful. Dr Center and Dr Tobias are the experts on this and honestly if post biles are less than 100 I would just do low protein in a dog not having any symptoms. If my dog had not been spay i would have done the liver biopsy to check for mvd and shunt but my dd had been spay prior to diagnoses and since no symptoms i did not feel any further testing was necessary and dee dee is also hypothyroid and severe allergies and she is on temaril p for all her allergies and hate doing it but atopica did not help and she has had issues for 4 years and we went to every specialists, etc so i opted for a short happy life rather than a long miserable one and she still has no symptoms even being on soloxine and temaril p |
