My little Shadow Donating YT Member | I sure hope your new little one is feeling much better! It's obvious, you are doing everything you can to make that happen. I remember when I got Bella as a puppy that one of the things the breeder told me when I took her to the Vet was *Must be treated for Coccidia as 80% of these pups are positive within the first week! When I brought this up to the Vet, he was like "why would she recommend that?" Bella didn't have it, but of course, I was concerned when the Vet didn't understand why she recommended it? Hope your baby is better soon!

| Update! Thank you so much for all your help and replies! Our little one is getting better...he has more spunk, and is eating and drinking more and pooing less. Last night and this morning he had poo's that were semi-normal...not quite solid, but not liquid like before. The consistency was more like a dense chocolate mouse! (Sorry if I have ruined your appetite...but I didn't know how else to describe it) My one question is: This morning after eating...he had a semi-solid poo followed by some mucus with a little blood in it! This was the first time he has passed any mucus or blood. I thought it was odd that he had mucus and blood for the first time after his diarrhea finally stopped. Is this normal? Is it just part of the healing process? Thanks again for all your help!

| He came to us on Bil Jac Puppy Zeus eats Nature's Variety Prarie and the puppy has eaten a few pieces (like 3 a day) of that...but goes to the Bil Jac 98% of the time. I didn't want to shock his system anymore than it already is so I have been waiting to switch...but I want him off the Bil Jac.

| While we're on the topic of food... Nature's Variety is an all stages food...and we have been extremely pleased with it for Zeus. Should I transition the puppy to Nature's Variety or a puppy specific premium food? I talked to the Vet about food and they not surprisingly recommended SD, Eukanuba, or Nutro Puppy! I told them I wanted to avoid corn, mystery meat, and additives! They told me that corn is only a problem if the dog is allergic (Zeus is). I told them I was looking into Orijen Puppy, Merrick Puppy Plate, or Nature's Variety and they said they didn't know about any of them. They said to stay with a commercial brand like Nutro b/c those brands are regulated and tested for optimal health...at which point I laughed and rolled my eyes!!!!! I could not believe it.

| Albon is good but it does take some time. I know when i use to breed i use to send a 5 day supply home with the new owners.. just for stress reasons.. My babies was raised in the house and never outside even with the parents never go out they stay in the house... anyway stress can bring it on and it will take a little bit but will go away.. good luck .. I always use bleach to clean with .. Per my vet.. ammion just covers it and also the dogs will use the potty in what every spot you spray it on... |

| Don't let them eat poo! I think everyone has summed it up nicely, I don't know if this was mentioned or not but don't let them eat each other's poo... make sure you have it picked up after every dropping. My vet said that this is how it is shared throughout litters. Good luck!! |

| Also- the vet told me the mucus/blood is quite common with coccidia. The mucus is an irritation in the intestinal lining, which in turn, breaks apart and gets excreted out. Stay on top of meds and it will be gone in no time! |

| I'm confused So now we are on day 6 of the Albon and Probiotics and I'm so very happy to say that the little guy is doing much better!!!! I am still confused about one thing though... This morning he had a semi normal poo...it was solid/firm and had good color but then about a half hour later he had another bowel movement that was all yellow mucus/goo!!! Is that normal? Why are his poo's getting normal and then he passes mucus? Has anyone else had this happen to them? Thanks for all your help!

| Has he had these weird stools since you got him? Maybe the food isn't good for him. If NV is an all life stages food, I see no reason to put him on a specific puppy formula. Keep on with the Albon and probiotics 4 hours apart though. It will eventually get rid of the coccidia.

| Well, I'm certainly not an expert, but I will offer you my experience. My baby had coccidia and giardia. It showed up about 3 or 4 days after we brought him home. After he went on the meds it cleared up right away. (He was taking Albon) Then about 1 week or a week and 1/2 the yucky poo came back. I was still treating him for the problem. Yogi would have inconsistent bowels- some solid, some soft, some runny etc. My vet would check up every day and didn't seem too worried, although they gave me some RX wet food made by Purina for digestive correction. They also gave me Tylen powder that I mixed with the wet food. He still had the fluctuation in bowels a few days after the wet food, but eventually went on to get better. Does your vet keep in close contact with you? If not, you probably should just give them a call to keep them informed and maybe they will want to switch up some medication or just keep him going as prescribed. The only thing I worry about is a puppy can't show very much as to how they feel and they seem to always want to play so it is difficult to monitor how they are feeling. I think the vet would know more than you could ever try to guess. Try giving them a call today to see what they think. Let me know how it turns out. Take care! |
