Confused Question about bleeding toenail

I feel like such a meanie. I cut Daisy's toenails this morning after giving her a bath and on the very last one, I cut it too short I cleaned it real good and then put antibiotic ointment on it and wrapped her foot in guaze. Naturally she pulled the bootie off and it started bleeding again. This was an hr. and a half ago and everytime I let her down to walk, it starts bleeding. I don't have one of those sticks you use to stop the bleeding, so I've put her in her kennel.

Is it possible that she can loose too much blood? As long as she's still in her kennel and not putting weight on her foot she doesn't bleed.

What should I do? I feel terrible making her stay in her kennel. I can hold her on my lap, but it seems like this is going to take a while. It would take me an hr to drive to town to get the stick and back.

What should I do?

Oh and I found a BIG FAT TICK between her toes when I took her out of the bath this morning...bleck! I almost cried! I had no idea it was there, it must have been there for a while. My girls love to go for walks, but it seems they get ticks everytime. I saved the tick in a bottle incase we have any problems.

HELP!

Also, after it quits bleeding, how long before I should let her go outside? I don't want it to get dirty or infected. Is that a possibility? Infection in a toenail?

Yes, toenail wounds can get infected! Don't let her out until she heals a bit. If you have to take her out for pee/poop purposes, take a short walk.
I'm more concerned about the bleeding. When I first got Romeo, I read somewhere how bleeding from cutting their nails too short will take a long time to stop, and you may have to take them to the hospital! Because of their small size, losing that much blood can be really bad! After reading that I decided to not cut his toenails myself and always wait til I go to the groomer...
I would keep a close eye on Daisy! Please keep us updated too...
I hope I didn't scare you, just take any type of bleeding in these small breeds very seriously...

Thanks, I'm calling the vet right now.

BTW, Daisy weighs 9 lbs, so she's not teeny tiny, but still 9 lbs is small for a dog.

I have heard that flour or corn starch could help stop the bleeding.
I think I would call the vet if it isn't stopping though.

Thanks, I just put some corn starch on it. Like I said, it doesn't bleed until she's up walking around on it for a while.
She's on my lap right now.

I've called the vet several times (redial) and the darn line is busy...grrrr! I get so mad! Everytime I need them, the line is busy!

Last time I was at the petstore they had liquid bandaid for pets, I grabbed it but haven't had to use it! Wish I was close enough to pass it on to you!! Maybe next time you go to the store you can grab one too.
For now, keep trying to contact the vet. If the bleeding stops by then, then I guess you won't have to take her in. But better safe than sorry! It is good to know she's 9 lbs...
Please stay calm and keep us updated.
She'll be okay...

Oh you poor thing! What a morning you and sweet Daisy have had. I have such a phobia of cutting my animals nails that I make my hubby do it. The last time that he trimmed Huckleberry's, he accidentially cut one too short and made him bleed. My husband came to me with a very pale face and said, "I made him bleed." I instantly grabbed Huck, started crying and pacing back and forth, asking my husband, "WHAT DO WE DO, WHAT DO WE DO?!". Yeah, I was obviously a ton of help. Anyway, Huck's stopped bleeding and he was just fine.

I think the nail has to be placed in a small container of it for this to work.

I had a palm full of the corn starch and sort of dabbed Daisy's foot several times into the corn starch...trust me, there's a lot on her foot. Poor little girl, I think she's stressed more than anything now

The bleeding has stopped and she's just laying on the back of the couch. As long as she lays there, I'm going to leave her alone.

I got through to the vet, finally! She said that she would fine..and not to worry. I asked if there was anything else I should do, besides what I'd already done and she said, "you did good, she'll be fine" I hope she's right.

That's the last time I cut their nails.

Tammy
It made me feel like a big fat meanie Mom! Poor Daisy, she's so patient and holds still and lets me do anything to her. She didn't even yelp when I cut it. I had no idea, until I saw blood on her blanket.
I think Daisy will be fine now too. I was really just worried that she could lose too much blood, but the lady at the vet who answered the phone kind acted like I was funny for asking. I sure as heck hope she knows what she's talking about.

Daisy is due for her yearly exam. I think I'll take her tomorrow and have the vet double check it, unless it bleeds more today, then we're going straight there!

Do you think that would be too much stress two days in a row, with her hurty toenail and then a shot the next day?

Hugs to you and Huck Baby

As long as she is back to normal tomorrow and the nail looks okay, I would go ahead with the shot. If infection were to set in (and it most likely won't), then I would wait on the shot.

I thought about using Super Glue on her toenail, but was afraid I'd do more harm than good. I think I'll check out what you're talking about and get some on hand. Even though I'M NOT CUTTING THEIR NAILS AGAIN!
THANK YOU

How funny!! I'm glad you didn't use the super glue Then you would've really needed to go to the emergency....lol...
I believe the liquid bandaid was at Walmart in the pets section and its in a small spray bottle. Its manufactured by a well known bandaid company, I just can't think of the name. Its good to have, just in case. It was next to the combs and other useful stuff. I know what you mean, I feel the same way and would never trim anything again Its not worth it...
