Question about medication Layla went to the vet (not HER vet because her vet was in seminars all day) anyways... and she was diagnosed with an eye infection. He gave us two types of eye ointment. - called BNP. One we are supposed to use 3 times a day for the first week and the second we are supposed to use for the 2nd week. So we've been doing this since Wednseday and Lay's eye is SO much better.. i guess my question is... once we finish the first week. is it essential that we keep doing this for the second week?

If you are comfortable with the vet's diagnosis, I would follow his/her instructions. If not call her regular vet for a second opinion. When one of our horses scratched an eye, we had to use one type of ointment because there was infection present. When the infection cleared, we used another type of ointment until the scratch healed. That might be the same type of situation with little Layal.

Woops, I forgot the most important part. I sincerely hope that little Layal recovers quickly. Eye infections are very very painful. Please give that sweet baby a hug from me

Thanks! you are right... i should continue. i guess it's like when people are on meds.. you feel better and think... do i REALLY have to do this.. but i know he gave us two for a reason. Plus Layla hates it so i thought if i could end it better great.. but i'd hate to do further injury to her eye!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yep, it is important. Just like any bug - just bc the symptoms are gone - it doesn't mean the infection is gone yet. It's the same with humans. The symptoms are gone before the bug is gone. And the way we "catch" it is in reverse - the bug is here before the symptoms are even showing. So, it's always important to remember that even though symptoms are invisible - the bugs are still very much present and could just re-infect if we stop medications -> only at THAT point they'll have built up some antibiotic resistance to the medication because we previously stopped the medication early. That's how antibiotic-resistant superbugs get created. Giving eye ointments stinks, I know!
