| Ear is red, itchy, and stinky Hi, guys. My yorkie's left ear is extremely itchy and stinky. We brought him to the vet a month ago and she gave a cream to medicate the ear. We put this cream in his ear and massage his ear. It has been a month and my yorkie is not getting any better ;(. I tried to medicate his ear today, but after medication he is still scratching and doing wiping his ear on his little towel. He also started to pant really hard and got extremely thirsty... Is there something extra I can do to help my little guy? I am getting really worried because it is just the left ear. I do not know what could have started this itchy ear. If anyone has gone through this and know a solution I would love to read it.... |

| Your vet should have an ear solution that prevents this from happening... This solution is squirted into the ear canal, you gently rub the ear, then allow your dog to shake excess out of the ear... Done daily for extreme cases or weekly... The solution I buy is called OTI SOOTHE, but your vet may have other just as good... Hope your baby recovers promptly... Hope the following video helps... | what medication was it as my dex had an ear infection and one time it was panalog and the other was optimax (i believe) depends on if it is a yeast or a bacteria infection. What did vet say? If having that kind of reaction i would call vet as sounds like medication is not helping. Quote:

YorkieTalk Newbie! | ear infection, stinky my max had an ear infection several months back, i'm not sure was it yeast or bacterial but it went away after one week of treatment...i've notice that he started getting stinky fast after getting bath so i started checking him and noticed his ear are infected again but this ear infected started several months after i've noticed that he has an abnormal odor...i've heard that you can give him a blue pill to help him from licking or scratching himself, is that true? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would go back to the vet. Wylie had ear problems for the longest time and his old vet kept saying it was nothing (grrrr). We went to a new vet and I was all "is it yeast, is it this/that - should we do a culture?" - and she said no - we should just use an ointment that treats it, no matter which one it is. Can't recall the name - but it must've been a wide-spectrum ointment that treated pretty much everything. We treated for 10 days - and it made his ears oily - and then almost his entire head - so it's pretty messy - but WOW, it cleaned up his ears FINALLY!

| The treatment Vet's use for yeast is usually Zymox - I think thats the one you might be thinking of, Wylie's Mom! A lot of dogs have yeasty ears - My Cavalier, Louis, is like a permanent yeast factory b/c its worse in floppy eared dogs & warm climates. I have to clean his ears 2X a day with an herbal flush! I use Halo Herbal ear wash and its good to get in the habit of cleaning your pups ears a few times a week, or more if he is prone to getting yeasty. Regular cleaning ensures you catch yeast right away and are familiar with your dog's ear anatomy in case anything changes, you'll notice it immediately. Zymox is an antifungal, not an antibiotic, so its very safe and it does wonders. It is messy, esp. for our little ones. Ella Bean hates having her ears cleaned, but Louis loves it, esp. the massage part. A good way to make it more pleasant is the use a nasal aspirator like you use for babies and dilute some of the ear wash in warm water. The main reason dogs don't enjoy ear cleanings is that the liquid is much colder then their internal temperature, so its like shooting ice water in their ears! You can't dilute the Zymox, but you can teach your dog to enjoy ear cleanings! You can also add probiotics in to theit diet which helps keep yeast at bay among plenty of other benefits!

| Please, change your vet.Go to another one and tell he/she what you have been doing all this month.I think this problem has to be treated in a complex (internal and external) way. You should have done it long time ago (2 weeks from now) when You had not seen any results from the cream application. Good Luck.. |
