| Kennel cough...or something else? Hello, I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this...Cayo is 8 1/2 months, 4 pounds, and she's developed a dry cough that sounds like gagging. Every few times she does this she'll "throw up" a small amount of clear or white mucous. We took her to the vet 2 days after it started (last Monday). The vet gave her antibiotics and a cough suppressant, and said it was kennel cough. She's been vaccinated and hasn't been around any other dogs in close quarters - just our regular sniffing of her friends during walks. Anyways, she's been on the antibiotics for almost a week now, and it's actually getting worse. She coughs/gags about 10-12 times a day, with something coming up 6-8 of those times. It's worse when she first wakes up (and often this wakes her up), or when she's resting. It doesn't happen when we are walking or playing. She otherwise is not acting any different - very playful, eating fine, walks great... Last night she woke up, had a coughing/gagging fit and threw up - a lot of vomit, not just the small amount of clear or white stuff. This was her dinner, a bit of grass - pretty much what I've seen her throw up before if she is car sick or something. That's the first time the coughing/gagging has prompted an all-out throwing up. We called the vet and he said bring her in on Monday. He still thinks it's kennel cough. I'm just really concerned that this is something worse than kennel cough. Does this sound like anything you've experienced? Thanks for your comments!! |

| Hi sorry you are haveing a tough time. The problem with kennel cough is there is no test to determine if that is what it is. Antibiotics is a good first corse of action just in case that is it you are covered. Milo went through a bout that confused everyone and it turned out to be reverse coughing. It would be helpfull for your vet if you could catch this on vedio for them and keep a log of everything you do and everytime it happens between now and the appt. I hope this helps and you figure it out soon. |

| Wow, this sounds just like Lily. I think she developed the kennel cough right after she got her first vaccine, because she hadn't been around other dogs to catch it from them either. Anyway, we haven't officially been told it is kennel cough, but it sounds just like what she's doing, except Lily doesn't throw up--but I've been told some dogs do. It breaks your heart to hear them sound so miserable! Hang in there... we've been dealing with it for a little more than 2 weeks now, and it takes about a month to clear up completely.

| Layla had kennel cough.. sounds just like that. The antibiotics are only to keep it from becoming pneumonia. Kennel cough is like the cold for us.. it has to run its course. Layla's took over a month to go away... i found that using a humidifier by her crate at night REALLY helped with the nightime coughing.. she would be up all night coughing. Hang in there.. it will go away. Layla was also vaccinated for kennel cough. |

| Trust your vet. Kennel cough can be very difficult to get rid of. I know it's hard to hear her cough, but try to give it little more time. |

| Another possibility is that it could be allergies...My yorkie was doing this, and it turned out to be pretty serious allergies. I removed all possible allergens from the house. Washed everything in non perfume, non dye detergent. Vacuumed everything twice a day for a couple of days. Washed walls, etc. It went away. It was happening at night or more around 4AM, 5AM, 6AM, etc. more than anything. It was like hacking, and he would hack up white liquid, sometimes foamy. It was really pitiful... Sometimes he would hack so much that he would end up vomitting just like you said. The vet actually gave us a cough expectorant instead of a cough suppressant because she said he needed to get that stuff out. I never ended up having to use it though because like I said, I removed all possible allergens from the house and went on a crazy cleaning rampage, and his allergy symptoms went away. The vet also put him on antibiotics just in case as well...

| I am going through this also. I got a Maltese puppy who has kennel cough and she had gotten it when I took her to the vet for puppy shots. I was so mad! Poor thing just hacks and hacks. It has been a little over 2 weeks now and she is on another round of meds. They gave Diddy my Yorkie the Intranasal vaccine and he is now sneezing and snorting. They said it is from the vaccine. Well if he was going to get it anyways why did they give him the vaccine? I am in the process of finding a new vet. Your baby may be having a reaction to the meds and that is making her throw up. I had that happen to Diddy a few weeks ago. I hope she feels better soon! Please let us know what the vet says monday! hugs!
