I have a can of pumpkin at home so tonight after I take a sample to the vet Im going to give Dex some canned pumpkin I guess. How much should I give him? Hes about 5lbs. I did boil the hamburger so the grease was out of it, is that ok? And I mixed it with plain white rice.

				   | How is your little Dex doing? My Gracie seems to be over her "flu", no poop at all for 22 hours now. I still have her on a bland diet, her appetite is not great but I can tell she is feeling better.

				   | I have dealt with diarrhea in a beagle and a cat and, after about 3 days, if it has not resolved I recommend seeing the vet. Diarrhea can take on a life of its own after a while and sometimes they recommend something to break the cycle. You may want to ask about Propectalin (like Kaopectate for animals.) (BTW-Don't give real Kaopectate because it has salicylates in it which is dangerous for them )Good luck. |

				   | Thank you! Dex is doing better. I called the vet yesterday and they wanted a stool sample. I got home from work and there was no stool samples, so I called the vet again and told them that he hadn't gone all day and he was fed rice & boiled hamburger. She told me to keep him on the bland diet and bring in a sample when/if he goes again. He went last night about 8pm and it had firmed up a bit. I think hes on the road to recovery. I did not feed him anything more than yogurt this morning and tonight I'll make more rice & hamburger to keep feeding him for the next couple days. He slept through the night and had nothing this morning. So I am going on 24 hours of no diarrhea, last he had any was yesterday morning. Keeping my fingers crossed that we are through this! So glad Gracie is doing so well!

				   | Awww...poor little fella. I hope he is feeling better soon.I dealt w/ something that sounds very similar a few months ago w/ Lexi. She started w/ just 'the runs' and then just as you described, started to have blood in it. She threw up a few times too. (I actually took a picture of it. Gross, I know, but I thought, "what if someone else asks and this *may* help them..." Go figure, I don't have the pic on my PC here...) I'd changed her food and suspected that was it after the first day. Feed her chicken and rice, but it didn't clear up. I think it was day 3 that I took her to the vet, let them take a stool sample--gastrointestinal upset. In all probability due to the food change. As a pp stated can happen, she had some intestinal inflamation as a result and a higher-than-normal bacteria count (which is common when that occurs.) She got some antibiotics and pectilin for her 'Hershey Squirts.' She was back to her old self in around a day.IMO, I doubt that after almost a week this is something that will just clear up without vet intervention/medication, especially when you have tried all normal 'quick fixes.' Just hang in there! Last edited by BamaFan121s; 05-16-2008 at 05:12 AM. |

				   | Oh yeah, one more thing: Lay of the pumpkin! That is for constipation! The opposite of the problem you are trying to solve! |

				   | I gave him some vanilla yogurt this morning, just 2 teaspoons. He didnt touch it. I left it down for him though in case he does want it. He seems to have cleared up on his own though. No diarrhea for 24 hours finally.. it went from sunday night to thurs morning. The vets office said that he was in no danger since hes eating, drinking, not puking and acting normal that more than likely its not even a parasite, just an upset tummy that is lasting longer than normal.

				   | Are you SURE about that??? I did a search and found a TON of threads saying to give canned pumpkin to a dog with diarrhea. I did not give him any but are you sure that its not good for diarrhea?

				   | Canned pumpkin is supposed to be good for both diarrhea and constipation...You can do a quick google search and find that it's good for both.

				   | If any of you are feeding Nutro foods...I think it is the dry kibble...it is causing these symptoms in dogs. They usually drink a lot of water, pee a lot and if not caught...it leads to kidney failure and death. Don't want to scare you but I have just been reading a couple of articles about Nutro.

				   | I switched to Eukanuba yorkie 2 months ago from NutroMax mini-chunk. My dogs are fussy and seem to like these 2 foods the best. I might make a switch to Canidae or back to Royal Canin!

				   | I think it is a question of the amount given. A couple tablespoons mixed with rice is good for diarrhea. It adds some bulk to the food and slows things down in the digestive tract. When there is a blockage (constipation) the fibre in larger amounts helps to push things through.

				   | One of my girls does currently eat Nurto, but not the one that got sick. (Who has eaten it in the past, no problems) There was actually no Nutro in the house at the time and she hadn't eaten it for a while. |
