To ARCHIE I took a nap when Holly did today....and feel so much better. She, of course, woke up very hungry. I think this site is wonderful for Yorkie owners who need support. I, for one, will never forget the help and advice given here for me and Holly. It all helped !!! Nikeann07

Hello Deborah I am up again and it is midnight for another Holly feeding and peeing. If I don't feed her she will cry endlessly until I do. Today she will be off all pills....to see how she fairs on just the w/d can diet. Vet wants the next 5 days to be just one pill every other day of the steroid. A really bad side effect with her personality all of a sudden is her food aggression..I was shocked!! This was never Holly to any degree. I am worried. Nikeann07

| You are a wonderful mom and I'm sure Holly appreciates that. I can't offer any advice, but Deborah is doing a wonderful job. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. I hope she has a good day today. Hugs, Sheilagh

Holly slept through the night It is 8 am and she did not wake me after her midnight feeding. I got some sleep and feel refreshed enough to take on another day. She is chasing the other 2 of my Yorkies for a chew...I had to put a bell on Holly so I know where and what she is up to while I am on this computer. The other 2 Yorkies have to give up their chews for the time being...Holly is feisty and ready for play this morning...It is the first morning she will be going through without any pills or steroids...I am hoping all your prayers will kick in about now...Because... how she does just on the diet today... will tell how she will fair in the long run. She enjoys pooping again Does not have water retention at all Hates the w/d food and looking for something else. I am calling the vet to let him know if there should be a change in feeding due to her aggression issue over foods the other dogs are eating...clearing she needs something else. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers Nikeann07 and Holly

Glomerulonephritis? We are experiencing Glomerulonephritis (or aka Glomelur Disease) I would highly recommend doing a complete blood work up and urinalysis. You need to start keeping a record book of all of her labs (make sure to request them from the vet) this is the only way you will be able to monitor her condition. You need to understand what your dogs BUN is. And also do a PCR (Protein Creatinine Ratio) here is a link on Glomerulonephritis... http://www.petplace.com/dogs/glomeru...ogs/page1.aspx There is a lot of info I think you will find very important to know about this disease. We also are seeing a "Specialist" now too. I have a post titled "protein loss in urine" that I just updated. you may want to read what I posted.

update on Holly Hi everyone, Vet visit showed she did not gain or lose weight ...still at 7.2 lbs Blood work showed her protein levels are up...it was at 1.3...it is now 1.5...normal is 2.5 He wants more blood work done tomorrow to see what her B12 level is. She may need on going shots for this vitamin. Holly needs to fast for 12 hours first. I am expecting a bad night ahead, because she is on the steroid today which makes her crazy hungry. She sleeps through the night now. Holly is still on the steroid ...now once every other day. Eating w/d can diet. Vet suggested giving this food to my other Yorkies also to stop the food aggression Holly has developed with the other two. To look at Holly you would never think anything was wrong...she is full of pep and playful...and soo loving. I still hand feed her to make sure she gets her measured share the vet suggested. I took her a walk ...it was great...she loved it soooo much...and I have missed it these last few weeks. Treatments have been expensive to say the least. I have cut back on many other things.....I don't have pet insurance. I just put a little away in a pet checking account for things my dogs may need. The balance is low now...so I am being careful with other personal spending. Thank you again for your prayers and well wishes...it means a lot to me. Nikeann07

I have a Yorkie named Guinness who has had this disease for 3 years. We are controlling it fairly well with meds and diet although he has an occasional episode. He eats nothing but chicken breast and turkey (white meat only) along with broccoli, cauliflower and green beans. He has 1/2 a Pet Tab once a day. He does not care for the other foods allowed such as fat free yogurt, scrambled egg whites, rice and potato. He is on prednisone and Immuran daily and takes metronidizole when having an episode. Although I don't care to have him on steroids all the time, he can't live without them so it is the lesser of two evils. The disease does progress over time. We monitor his albumen level with blood work on a regular basis as he develops uncontrollable shaking and tremors as a result of calcium and protein loss. When his albumen level drops, his prednisone dosage goes up until the albumen comes up again. It's a real see-saw. We also keep calcium pills with vitamin D & K on hand that we can crush and dissolve in water and administer with an eye dropper when it appears that he is in need. I hope this information helps. Some dogs maintain quite well. I am fortunate to have a vet who has taken a great interest. I would be interested in knowing how your dog is doing. Guinness1

hello Guinness1 I am so sad that you also are going through this with your Yorkie You gave me so much more information about the caring and maintaining of this disease. Your Vet sounds like he is on top of things too. I have been told that this disease changes the quality of the dog's life as it continues on...this makes me cry...Holly is such a perfect dog...she does not deserve this. _________ Holly is getting a B-12 shot once a week... the steroid every other day..Flagel twice a day....She is soooo bored now with the W/D vet food...I asked my Vet if I could make any small changes ...like add chopped carrots ...he frowns at me and say...."it has to be a STRICT" diet of nothing else for a month of testing with this treatment. She gained 2 oz. Which the Vet was happy with. Holly is playful most days and listless after the B-12 shot for a day...Vet says it is not related to her being listless. She seems very frail to me these days. What kind of episode does your Yorkie have sometimes? I would love to be able to give Holly chicken breast at some point ...it was always her favorite...She can't have any Fat at all. I have to stop her from eating grass outside. It is constant watching and worry all the time. I try to have the positive attitude around her ...still take her for walks and keep to her regular routine. This seems to help so much also. I don't eat meals around her or snack..I haven't cooked in my kitchen since this all started a couple of months ago...because the smells make her go crazy hungry!!! My Other two Yorkie's are doing just fine on the same W/D diet....thank goodness...because other food on their breath makes Holly aggressive. The Vet does not want me to even give Holly Heartguard once a month anymore. Her food is measured out each day....1 cup of food...she only eats half. I hand feed her to make sure she gets enough to keep her weight up. After 2 more B-12 shots ...she will have bloodwork again to see where her levels are and then how to treat her from there. I asked the Vet plain out "Am I going to Lose her"? He said she has maybe a few years with good care but the years won't be all that good for her. I am hoping to prove him wrong about this. I appreciate you're being truthful with me and hope you keep letting me know how things with your Yorkie are doing! I will also keep you informed about my Holly's progress. Nikeann

Hi again!! I looked on the box of Heartguard and it does not say....The Vet said he just wants her strictly off of it..saying "was not necessary since she is in the house and not running around in bad areas etc" She is not an apartment dog...I do have a large backyard. I still give Heartguard to my other two Yorkies. I would be interested in knowing if your Vet feels the same way while treating your Yorkie. Nikeann07

| You know, Holly is improving but it is a very slow process. When I read the word "fragile" to discribe, Holly, it means exactly that...she is in a very fragile condition. The steriod makes them jumpy, Vitamin K has not effect other than building up the clotting of the blood. I would inject Sophie on a schedule to save her visits to the vet. At some point, they go down hill at a slow pace, however, Holly sounds like she is striving to recover. Please remember the food for Holly is not a complete diet for your other pups. Make sure to add protein to their diet, or they will be lacking. The only solution I can see is to separate her when they are eating. Let them finish & clean up the bowls. This is a tough time, but if she is strong enough, Holly will remain wit you for many years. Warmly, Deborah
