Default New Puppy at Emergency Vet!!

Okay, I just got my new 9 week old yorkie puppy, Lexie. My 12 year old yorkie passed away 2 years ago, so I thought it was finally time. She was the runt of the liver, has been to the vet by the breeder...they said she was eating fine. They did tell me she was eating Eukanuba. Took her thursday, she ate a little food, but not much. Same thing friday. I did some research on here and started getting worried about hypoglycemia because she was acting groggy. Gave her pancake syrup, she perked up. Went saturday am and got some nutrical in case it happened again. We finally got in touch with the breeder and found out she was eating alpo. She ate that heartily on Sat. and took her to the vet. He said blood sugar normal, looks healthy, lungs and heart sound good, she just needs to keep eating. She ate a little sat. night. Woke up sun. am to find her trying to throw up, gave her nutrical, took her to the emergency vet. Said her sugar was 83-normal, but could be thrown by the nutrical. Gave me A/d food to force feed her if she wouldnt eat on her own. So, force feed her 3 times sunday, and she at once on her own. At bedtime, she started throwing up. Gave her karo syrup and rushed her to emergency vet. Her blood sugar was only 51. They still have here with a jugular iv of dextrose. She is eating intermittenly, but her sugar will still get too low, despite the dextrose. They are going to do the 12 hour test I have seen mentioned here, but has anyway had this before. She is so sweet, but only weighs 1 and 1/2 pounds. If it is shunt, I don't even know if she is too little for anesthesia. Is there anything else if could be?? I cannot bear to lose another one, even after only having her for less than a week...losing my Buttercup before was devastating. Any help would be appreciated, sorry to be so long winded.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I think University of Tennessee has done liver shunt surgery on two pound dogs... The 12 hour fast is no longer recommended for the bile acid test. It is fine to do it but it isn't necessary and I wouldn't do it with a dog that is suspected of having hypoglycemia. The important thing with a bile acid test is a blood draw before a meal and one two hours after.

I'm so sorry about your new baby. I would definitely check into liver shunt. If she was eating regularly, her blood sugar should not be dropping so suddenly. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have liver shunt than all other breeds combined so definitely have a bile acid test done on her. I hope she'll be okay. Keep us updated

Oh my. Poor little lovey! Our little girl did not eat well in the beginning either. We force fed her by syringe now and then with the following that was recommended by a breeder:

1/2 c milk
1/2 c instant baby rice cereal
1 jar strained baby meat (no turkey)
1/2 tsp. karo syrup

Thin this mixture out with milk if it gets too thick. Can be refrigerated for a couple of days.

This brought her energy back up so that she regained her appetite. She would often throw up in the a.m. with foamy yellow stuff which was a result of having an empty stomach and then she was nauseated and would not eat, so we would get her to eat some crumbled up rice cake and then she'd be fine and eat again. We learned to get her to eat just before bed, so her tummy wasn't empty in the a.m. and that prevented the throw-ups.

Cali my 2 1/2 year old kept having hypoglycemic episodes and was at the er vet a lot for iv therapy etc. when she was a puppy. I had to feed her every 3 hours even during the night. She wa 1 lb at 9 weeks and the runt of the litter. She was diagnosed with very mild MVD or internal liver shunt. They specialist felt that her case was so mild she didn't need treatment and wasn't the cause of her hypoglycemic episodes. She did grow out of the hypoglycemic epsidoes. I would just do what you are doing, watching her carefully, make sure she eats frequently, even if it's not the best food, Cali would only eat Cesars wet food. Once she got older I switched her to a good dog food. The test should give you a more difinitive diagnosis. I will keep her and you in my prayers that it is not serious. I know how terrible it is to go thru this.

I am so sorry your new puppy is so sick. At nine weeks old she is should still be with her mother so hopefully this is just a problem regulating her blood sugar and not a liver shunt.

Please keep us posted, okay?

Trust me, I so wish now I had done more research and she had stayed with her mother longer. I would have paid just to keep her there longer if I knew what I know now. I will ask about the bile acid test, that may have been what they said, but I have just been so frantic. She is still under 24 hour care, so at least it makes me feel better she is under constant watch. They said she is playful though, I just want her to be well. It is coming up on the anniversary of my other yorkies passing, so it just scares me even more. I have these crying fits at work and in a retail setting they just dont go over very well. I really want to thank you guys for this website and the information....and please just pray for my little baby. I just hope I can find out what's wrong and make her better.

Have you spoken to your breeder? Do you have a health guarantee? Your vet bills will get up there pretty quickly.

Praying for your baby. She is at the best place right now to get her better. I know it is so devastating to have them sick and away from us. Whenever my Yorkies have been kept at the vets or er vets they tell me that they spend most of their time being held by the staff. WHen Dixie was in for her all day testing the specialist said her feet never touched the ground and no one got any work done that day. So they do give them loving for you,

My mom did get to go see her yesterday. She was yippy and playing, so that makes me feel somewhat better. She is getting the bile acid test. They did the second part this morning at 6, so it is a day turn around to get the results. We did talk to the breeder and they do have a health guarantee, they will refund me the money or replace the puppy ( which I told them I am not concerned about), I do not want another one, I just want Lexie to be healthy. She will be at the 24 hour vet for awhile now, but at least she seems to be getting a little more stable. I will definitely keep you posted, esp. when we get the results back. The prayers are a godsend, thank you!!
