I took my dog in yesterday for some shots. The vet gave her one shot. I was to come back in three weeks for the next round. I am not sure which shot they gave her. Three hours later Chloe started to rub her face into my carpet, bed, couch, and anything she could rub her face on. She acted like it was hurting or just itching badly. She started running around the house acting crazy. I picked her up and noticed her eyes and mouth were turning red and starting to swell. I rushed her to the vet and they said it was an allergic reaction to her shots. They kept her over night and gave her benadril. BUT... I shampooed my carpets this same day. I told the vet that I thought it was from the carpet but she thought it was fromt he shot. I picked her up today and took her home. I blocked her off where she could not get on my cleaned carpet and watched her. Once again she started rubbing her face on the carpet. I put her back in her pin and went back to work. Hopefully she is okay now. What do you guys think?? Shot or from the shampoo. I am new to this and I dont know much about yorkies. I have had to take her to the vet for many things!

Welcome to YorkieTalk

I would say the shot. If she is rubbing her face again she needs to be watched. Swelling can cause throat closure. Are her gums pink?

First off welcome to YT.

I'm so glad you could join the group. Now for my opinion on your question. She needs to be with you. If she is swelling, this is not good at all and can cut off her air supply. I would say it's the shot. My Chihuahua who passed away this past Sept. at 16 years old, did the exact same thing when we got her first shots at 4 months old. She never got another shot the rest of her life. Make sure the Vet. has it written in her record to give her the benadril BEFORE giving any shots, and to also break all those shots down onto smaller groups. Next, no annual shots. Wait at least three years before getting any more.

My Yorkie went into shock after a couple shots once. She needed emergency treatment.

NO ANNUAL SHOTS???? How can you do that?? How about Rabies?? How would I explain that to my vet?

Annual vaccination causes more harm than good. Vaccines are very dangerous so you shouldn't give more than what is necessary. They last lots longer than one year. Rabies you have to comply with the law but the rest are up to you. How about titers if your vet is that worried?

Thank you so much for all the replys!! I have someone that is suppose to be checking on her while im at work. The vet said she would write down that she had a allergic reaction to the shot and they wouldnt use anymore shots with the same stuff in it. She told me the name of what she thought she was allergic to, but i cant remebr the name. Do you think I should give her another benadril if she continues to itch?? My vet didnt tell me what to do. Im thinking about changing vets. Everytime I take her I have to do all the question asking..they dont ever tell me anything unless I ask. Also, everything is so costly with this vet. I am a college student and its very hard for me to afford all of this but I cant just not take her. My first experiece with taking her to the vet was she swallowed a whole tampon!!! She had to have emergency surgery the next morning. It was $500.00!!

Also, can the shots make them tired..usually she is very playful but after her shots she didnt want to play or anything..she just slept the whole day.

Sorry you're having problems with your vet.

$500 is very cheap for emergency surgery though. Was it the lepto that she is allergic to?

That sounds right..but I dont want to say yes because im not for sure. My aunt went and checked on her she looked fine but still tired acting. I bet its from being away from home and the benadril.

Quite a few vets still give Yorkies lepto (Ellie's included). It is not a good idea unless you are in an endemic area and then it still isn't a really good idea. This vaccine has been known to kill Yorkies.

She should get rabies at 4-6 months (best to wait til 6 months with Yorkies).
DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo and parainfluenza) is given 3-4 times, 3-4 weeks apart (only necessary to give three times as long as it is started no earlier then about 8 weeks). This is a combo vaccine so it is four in one (lepto and corona are sometimes added. I wouldn't do lepto and corona isn't necessary).
Most vets give bordetella and I'm not sure where that fits in because I don't give it.
Don't let them talk you into the giardia vaccine or the lyme's disease vaccine unless they pose a large threat in your area and even then I wouldn't.

If you mean she is getting 5 in one day and they are part of a combo shot, that is normal (except it should only be four...DHPP). If you mean 5 separate injections then no way. They should get one shot per visit in my opinion and they should be spaced out atleast a week or two in between.

RAbies are only given once a year in the south & southeast part of the US I believe. Most states give every three years.

If you keep your dog(s) confined to your fenced yard only and never socialize or travel with them ... I could maybe have my arm twisted to understand no shots.

Dogs are like people and each react differently to shots.
