I just had to leave my yorkie in the pet hospital for 24 hours because of vomiting and other tests and it cost about 1000.00. I just signed up for the VPI pet insurance.

Well I need SOMETHING to keep me occupied until my furry little gal arrives. Lol

But yes, I have been researching for a long time about all things yorkie. I owe it to myself and my family (and pup to be) to make sure that I am as prepared as possible. I would hope that most people would take the responsibility as seriously!

I am definately not going to get a puppy with known health problems (unless it is more of a rescue type situation), but from what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, some things dont show up in the first year. Especially as he/she gets older.

About health guarantees from the breeder...generally, if something goes wrong, do they help pay the vet costs or offer to exchange for a healthy dog? In my mind a health guarantee doesnt do me much good if they offer to exchange, because the day that I get him/her, he/she will be family...and I just couldnt imagine exchanging him/her. Maybe this varies breeder to breeder?

In your experience...or to the best of your knowledge...what is the most costly medical treatment? Lets say worst comes to worst and surgery is needed...what is the most costly?

Generally speaking no they do not help pay vet expenses. They usually offer to replace the puppy.

I do not have pet insurance and personally wouldn't purchase it. That's just me.

So true, who really wants the puppy replaced.
We do not have pet insurance either. Looked into it, and also wouldn't purchase.

I guess if one has 1000.00 to pay everytime, then that is great for you. Unfortunately, I do not. I have looked into about 4 different pet insurance companies and have not read a single thing about replacing your pet. Not sure who you got that info.

Sorry, when I asked about replacing or covering costs, I meant the original breeder. If there is a health guarantee, do they replace or cover?

I was actually responding to the other posts that talked so negatively about pet insurance. I have had Dayzee for three wekks and I am already out about 2000.00 including what we paid for her. If I can get any part od that back, I am thankful. Once you decide on a vet, get their advice on pet insurance. That is where I got my onfo. My vet says she has more patients on it than not. That sold me.

I believe you misinterpreted what was meant. The posters were stating that the breeder generally does not help with vet expenses, but will sometimes offer to replace the puppy.
About the pet insurance, the poster meant that, like ALL insurance, they do NOT cover pre-existing conditions and the insurance is not cost effective on a healthy pet.

Like all insurance, it's a gamble whether or not to get it since you have to get it before any conditions for needing it exists. But,for many folks, just the peace of mind insurance offers is well worth the cost of coverage. Our vet has pretty much echoed this statement as well as our life insurance salesman and our employer's benefits director.

I don't have pet insurance because one year we saved all the vet bills for our very sickly yorkie who is 8 yrs old and lives at the vet. Then when we started to subtract what the insurance would have paid, we only would have saved 20.00 dollars for the whole year. We don't have 1000.00 every time we visit the vet either, so it would have been great if the insurance would have really covered more.

i didn't know yorkies were expensive.. as in the vet area..

i'm on a program where i pay monthly.. and it's not bad..

Your right. What I pay is very reasonable compared to what I have paid already in the first 3 weeks of having her.
