| Willy was just diagnosed with diabetes... On Christmas eve morning we took Willy to the vet as he has been having piddle accidents on the floor for the past few days(Willy NEVER has accidents), so they did a urinalisis and it came back that he was diabetic and he was Ketonic +3, and would have to be taken to the emergency clinic until he was no longer ketonic, and would then be on insulin. He came home today(saturday) So any information would be helpful from those of you BTDT out there Desiree & Willy |

| Sorry to hear about Willy. I am glad you caught it and that he is going to be okay. I don't have any experience with diabetic dogs, but I am sure those others on this board who have will be posting soon.

| My Lady will start her seventh year with diabetes next week. It is a very treatable disease and will not effect his quality of life or lifespan if you keep his blood sugar under control. There is a ton of information on this website. It became my bible in the beginning. http://www.petdiabetes.org/contents.htm I could not have made it through the first year without this forum. I learned so much from the wonderful, caring people there. I really encourage you join: http://p092.ezboard.com/Canine-Diabe...caninediabetes If you have any questions or need support, please feel free to pm me. |

| your post really caught my eye, although i have no experience or advice with canine diabetes. my husband however, was diagnosed with diabetes in august at the age of 22. there is so much to learn about the disease but the good news is that YOU are in control of this disease. i'm sure your baby will get used to shots very soon. my heart and prayers go out to you and your baby.

| I just wanted to let you know to keep your chin up. Your baby can do fine and live a long life even with diabetes. I had my cairn terrier for 15 years before she was diagnosed with diabetes. She had to be given shots every day. That terrified me. I HATE shots and had a hard time even watching someone get one on TV. So it was hard for me to do it. But my vet taught me what to do and how to regulate her. Sometimes when I gave her the shot, she would yelp and I would sit down and cry. I so didn't want to hurt her. But she did fine. I had her another year and a half til she was well over 16 years old. I loved her so much and it about did me in when I lost her, but I know that she was happy right up til the end. As long as the diabetes was kept under control, she was her same ole puppy self even at that age. It will be fine.. just remember you have to do what you have to do to keep your baby healthy and happy. Sonya

| Thank-you, thank-you, thank you... for the sites & the help with information, I really appreciate it. I am so far doing "ok" with the injections. I have a vet appointment with our vet tomorrow, and they are going to check the blood glucose and see how he is doing with that. My biggest questions are whether I should be checking his blood glucose or not, and if so,what kind of meter do I get, and what should his blood glucose be at. I guess this will all come with time. Again, thanks for the information! Desiree & Willy |

| I check Lady myself with an Ultra One Touch meter. It took me about a year to get brave enough to do it, but it's really, really easy. I prick the inside of Lady's lip to get a small drop of blood for testing. I have always made it such an upbeat experience (with a treat afterwards, of course!) that she actually comes running when I tell her it's time to check her sugar. I swear by home testing. It's allowed me to always keep Lady within the target range and I am convinced that is why she has done so well for so many years, even kept her eyesight! Her opthamologist is amazed that after all this time she still has no sign of cataracts. You will get tremendous support on the forum. A friend of mine is a moderator over there. |

| Sorry to hear about Willy. My neighbor's dog has diabetes. I believe he gets two shots a day. They check his sugar by capturing his urine and then use a test strip. Good luck and take care.
