| Swollen below bum I noticed that Bear was struggling to poop so I gave him a bath to see if this would help. Well when I got him in the sink I realized that he had poop stuck in his hair and partial in his bum. I cleaned him all up and trimmed the longer hair. Afterwards I noticed that he was really swollen below his butt. Is this where their glands are? Do you think that is because he was struggling for awhile? Thanks

Sometimes they can become impacted, infected or even rupture so I'd call your vet and get them done as soon as you can. | |

| Thanks for your quick response. I will get him in ASAP. Is there a reason why this happens?

| He doesn't have a stinky butt. I'm giving it a couple days to see if it all goes back to normal naturally. If not I will take him to the vet on Monday.

| i didn't notice any swelling on Ceeby before but last Saturday during his bath, I noticed a place that looked like a tumor below and a little to the side of his anus. he had been really grouchy for two weeks. We tried to express his anal glands but it seemed dry. oh, it was red, too. I took him to the vet and by the time we got there, he had a hole that looked like aa fresh cigarette burn in that area. the vet couldn't express anything either but it was slightly draining just enough to use a q-tip to see the color and etc. No smell at all. he said the anal gland had ruptured probably because of the warm blow dryer But, it had drained to the inside. he had a very high fever and was put on antibiotics. He is fine now, but I knew something was wrong because he had been grouchy for two weeks. He isn't usually hateful except when he is trying to sleep. he hadn't scooted on his butt or anything like they usually do with full anal glands. The vet said he had been grouchy because it was painful till it ruptured. |

| It's not pretty, but this video explains things well. Many groomers can offer the service of expressing the anal glands at a less expensive rate than vets. It's best to phone first to see if they offer this service beforehand because not all groomers do this. |
