I guess, bottom line, when these little abnormalities happen … there are two choices … either spay/neuter and the breeder keeps them or find people like us who can & will provide anything money can buy for them and care for them like children!! We thank God every day that Ava chose to do the latter!![/QUOTE] WOW! What a powerful post! You're such a great owner. I just wonder if the people who breed the tinies are telling the breeders they got the dogs from about what they're doing. |
i'm glad i could get a chuckle outta all of ya, even you SoCalyorkiLvr! :D SoCalyorkiLvr, i wanted to mention tho, my vet did not specifically identify the "special cases" where bitches under 5lbs *MAY* be used for breeding. so i can neither confirm nor deny the "special case" you're suggesting. But she did say "special cases" and "may" with a look of distain. Kinda like how i tell people my 15 yr old clucker of a car, which drives fine within city limits, "MAY" (insert finger-quotes a la Dr. Evil of Austin Powers) be able to make the drive from San Francisco to San Diego this Christmas in (insert finger quotes again) "special cases", such as: packing the car very lightly, no traffic on I5, no extreme heat or cold during the drive, the engine does not overheat, i am commited to stopping every few hours to cool the engine and check the engine oil level to refill as necessary, the wind is behind me as i make the climb up the grapevine, just to name a few. But i also run the risk of being stranded in the middle of nowhere with a useless car and in desperate need of tow truck with a good mechanic. There's a remote possibility of success but the odds are against it and why should i or anyone in my position take that risk? Therefore, i'm taking the plane instead. ;) |

Yorkie weight I'm sorry I know this has nothing to do with this thread, but I have never posted any questions on here and am sort of lost...My 4mo old yorkie baby, Goliath, weighs about 5lbs. I heared this is quite large for a yorkie this young. The breeder I bought him from said he would weigh about 6 full grown. I've looked at puppy weight charts online to maybe get an idea but for his age and weight they chart doesn't go that heavy! I have also been told (not by experts) that maybe his is not full bred (part silky). He is AKC registered and the vet told me he is just a "healthy" boy, but I'm starting to wonder if he will weigh more than breed standard. I love him too much to care now anyways, but I am still curious and the breeder guarenteed an approx. weight, so if he is going to be large I would like to talk to the breeder too. Sorry again about posting on the wrong thread  If anyone has any info please help! Thanks in advance. |

I understand how you're feeling. The only way I would be mad about it is if the breeder guaranteed you a "tiny" and then it got this big and you paid alot of extra money for it. When I got Brandy she was 1.2 lbs. Now she is about 3 1/2 at 4 months, but the lady never said how big she was going to be. It's like how you can't estimate how tall your kids will be or their weight. The best way to guarantee the weight or look of a dog is to wait until he's out of the puppy stage. So what it comes down to is if you're not using him as a stud or show, just be glad he's healthy. And now that you're more experienced, next time you'll know what to look out for. Thanks for posting your question, because now other yorkie seekers till know this. Good luck with the little guy, I'd love to see pics. |

Do you have pictures of your Yorkie ? |
Well, I haven't asked my vet's opinion of this topic and won't, so I didn't answer the poll. I don't plan on breeding but if I did I know my opinion therefore I have no need to ask, I don't think its good. Plain and simple. First off I could jump off a 3 story building and come out alive, heck I could come out with very few injuries, but do you think I'm going to risk it because it "could/may" be ok? Heck no. I also would not "throw my tiny female (if I had one) off a 3 story building" either. I don't think I could breed a tiny female knowing that there "may" be complications, that I might be responsible for the death of my dog as well as her puppies. I can't even imagine considering to put my Reagan's life as risk because of my own selfish reasons of wanting to breed her. She's not tiny and like I said I'm not breeding her so I don't have to worry about it. To address the issue of where the cutoff of a tiny should be and the fact that a female under a certain limit may be ok. You know I think its just better to say 5 lb. is the limit (it seems to be a nice round number that most have agreed upon). Responsible breeders know if a female is ok to breed or not based on whatever they base it on not just weight alone. I however don't, therefore if there are inexperienced breeders out there (which we all know there are) and they are in the same boat as me and can't tell if a 4 lb. female is ok to breed and we all say no to under 5 lbs then maybe just maybe they will take that advise and not risk breeding a 4 lb female. I realize that those who don't know these types of things shouldn't be breeding but they are, and hopefully we can educate them but until we (or rather you) do maybe we can save that 4 lb female's life. Also I would like to commend minniemn on not giving out the vet's info. Yes, it may be public but if its public then go find it yourself. As a matter of fact she took it a step further than I would've because there's no way I would've even called to ask if I could have given it out for these purposes. If someone around me is interested in going to see my wonderful vet then I would give them all his info along with wonderful praises about him. Honestly I don't think my vet, or many vets for that matter, is up for just answering questions to fill someone's curiosity. I know I wouldn't be. Also I don't think her vet/specialist is the only one out there and I'm pretty sure if there's more then they pretty much all have an opinion on this subject, I honestly can't imagine anyone having anything to do with breeding or the birth of small dogs not having one. Heck how many of us on here have an opinion and don't breed, we are only connected to breeding mainly by things we read on here, as well as possibly other internet findings. I haven't been around for a while and I have to say I've missed all you guys...I've got a lot to catch up on I guess, but after reading all 10 pages of this one, I think I'm going to save the rest for another day. |

hmm...I guess it did make some sense huh? I was wondering if it would. I kinda thought it might turn out to be a jumbled mess, although I reread it 5 times. |
It made GREAT SENSE and I totally agree with every single thing you said - and I agree about giving out vet info - they sure don't need to be interrupted over questions that most people already know the answers to...Even if I hadn't had conversations with my vet - I certainly would never need clarification over what is an acceptable size to breed a female and I'm not a breeder. |

I also wanted to thank you for understand why the vet doesn't want their information publically posted, and for commending me instead of doubting me. |

We did lots of research before we even bought one...Everything from behaviors to health to life span. **You know in life I have found that we all have questions about lots of stuff (Us Too)but usually what you get is 'SOMEONES OPINION THAT THEY WOULD DO OR FEEL"...THat does not mean that peoples opionions are always right!...Sometimes we just have to use that thing called "COMMON SENSE"...BUT...I Quess not every person has that....
