my breeding program is so far down the road, I haven't even asked yet. |
I asked when I took Crissy in for her first vet visit. Didn't have a need to know before then because I only had two boys. My vet said no way. She said c-sections are an option but that she advises against it because of the risk to the bitch and potential complications. |
My vet flat out kick my tail end. Maybe we need to ask one of our vets to get in in writing or come post why this is a bad thing point for point and or why if someone was a vet saying it ok to do this post the same point for point. |
My vet said absolutely NO WAY would he had ever advised breeding Hallie. He was very angry to discover she had had litters and told me that if I had brought her and SImon to him about breeding he would have sat me down to explain the dangers and would refuse to see me again if I went against him. She has c-section scars and an abundance of scar tissue from her experiences! For those of you that don't know, Hallie apparently had at least 2 litters BEFORE I rescued her and I just found out. She is very small, 9 inches long and weighed 2.5 pounds when I got her (she now weighs almost 5)! But looking at her little body I could never imagine putting her through that! |
the 3 vets at our Clinic said ...."Absolutely not"! |
Are you defining a "tiny" as anything under 5 lbs? The fact is that most general vets do not have a lot of experience with breeding and whelping. The best professionals to ask would be the reproductive specialists, but since most people don' t have those then it will be interesting to see what th vets say. From the responses I am hearing so far, it sounds like they are advising against breeding period regardless of size. It is important ask for the rationale for their opinion as well like, increased risk of c-section, smallness means they have less "reserves", smallness means there won't be room for the puppies, whatever. The breed standard for chihuahuas is 2-6 lbs but they can be mush larger so is it okay to breed a 3 lb chihuahua? If the basic argument for not breeding a smaller yorkie is that smaller equals more rsk then is the ame true for chihuahuas which are slightly smaller than yorkies on average? |

"One said he didn't think it was safe for under 4-5 lbs and the other said no WAY under 4". So, if you define a tiny as anything under 5 lbs which I think most people do then at least one of them thinks it's okay as long as it isn't under 4 lbs and the other is possibly okay with a 4 lber. |
