You're right. I mistakenly thought you were referring to thoses who choose not to spay. I do respect Ceasar for all he has done to help dogs and their owners understand behavior issues and become better parents.

Getting back to the spaying/neutering issue. I've always had all my furbabies "fixed". The only thing I have been wary about is the fact that my vet always wanted to put a breathing tube down her throat. I was warned by the breeder that this could do some damage to the airway. My little man, Secret, was neutered by the time he was 6 months. He died of a collapsed trachea 4 years later. I'm not sure if they put a tube down for neutering, and I won't blame the vet for his problem later in life, but I begged my current vet to please not put the tube into her and he said he had to do it. He promised a ferret tube would go down her throat. Well, she was recently diagnosed with a collapsed trachea disease with the collapse up much higher. I wonder about the times she also had her teeth cleaned now. I wonder about a lot of things now that my baby is sick with the same thing that Secret had. She is only going to be 8 years old and also has congestive heart failure. I feel like a terrible mommy now who had the stupid tube put down her throat.

Your vet is absolutely right though. The airway has to be held open with a tube. It is absolutely necessary so it doesn't close.

It seems your damned if you do and damned if you don't at times. Trying to do the
right thing and then something goes wrong must be difficult to deal with.
You did nothing wrong. Your a wonderful mommy, doing your best to protect

Hey, Im soooooo sorry for your loss and for the pain you are currently going through. My breeder also told me somewhat of a horror story related to the tube that was put down one of her friends dogs throat during a neuter surgey. The little man suffered from collapsed trachea and brain damage :confused:... Im unsure as to how, but it was related to the tube being put down the puppies throat. I dont think you should blame yourself at all! I understand feeling terrible, and i can not ask you to not feel that way, because frankly id probably feel the same if my little shia was suffering from the same issues. I think as a pet owner we are called to make some really tough decisions, some which are really life threatening. You did what you felt was right, I just hope that your little girl doesnt suffer the same ultimate fate as your little man did.

I think getting your dog fixed is important thing to do if you are not a breeder. I think as responsible pet owners we should think about the risk of breast cancer in females. I don't know if there is any risk with male dogs I have never owned a male dog. I just realized that, lol I was always under the impression that females were easier to house break.
Anyways that is my opinion.
Pixie was spayed last month and I am glad I did it bc I would feel awful if she had gotten breast cancer or unexpected pregnancy.

I know that Kissy is much better off than Secret was with his collapse at this point, but I just can't help, wonder "if only" and what if"? My breeder immediately asked me when I called about her condition "if I had allowed that damn (her words) tube be put down her throat for any surgeries?" Of course, I had, but it was a ferrett tube, she said it didn't matter that it just damages those little fragile rings in the throat. Once they've been messed with it's all downhill from there.

Thank you Jazzybee for your comments. It was an ordeal for my little boy to go through and his suffering has never been forgotten by any of us. I would again have any dog spayed and neutered, if I was not going to breed them, as there are other things they are prone to and they are not pretty either. You just try to do the best you can do, but I still wonder about the trachea tubes and who actually inserts them. Would a vet tech do this or the vet and how do they know when to stop pushing it into these little babies? Once the ring/s are damaged there is no going back.

I agree, we as humans have already tampered with the canine species. But all that you have named are not permenant or life threatening. We can take the bows out of thier hair, and take off the cloths. We can give them what they would naturally eat. But once we take out thier organs we cant just put them back in. I have always been a highly sensitive person to the feelings of others. and when i look at my little Shia and think of the pain and suffering i'd be putting him through i just cant do it! I just cant stop thinking of how it would make him feel! When i first got him i had the intent on getting him fixed, and even at that point i was some what against the procedure. I never pictured myself with a male dog, and after reading about how intact males can act i made my mind up that I was going to get him fixed as soon as i could. But as i grew to love him, i battled internally with what seemed like a very difficult decision, and i no longer could force myself to take him in and get fixed! I love the way my dog acts, I love him and i dont want to change him for anything! I feel like this form of tampering, is tampering gone too far! Its not right to me, there are situations where this surgery is neccesary to save a dogs life, and in those situation I'd get it done in a heart beat but when my dog is healthy and happy there is no reason i feel i must put him through unneccesary pain.

I fear that if this mandatory spay and neuter surgery continues we may have dog extinction, just like we have had with so many other animals that humans have tride to control.
I MUST ADD HERE HOWEVER THAT I DO NOT CONDONE IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDING. I DO BELIEVE PET OVERPOPULATION IS A PROBLEM!

I just feel that there must come a point where we ask ourselves if there is another solution.

Thank you for your comment, I know that there are a minority of people who are open to saying that it should be a pet owners decision on whether to get the procedure done or not. and i also know its very difficult to hold this position when the majority are saying its wrong and should be mandatory so i appreciate that you have held this position with me.
