After one of my girls developed pyometra at 5 yrs old.....required an emergency spay on a weekend ($) and more importantly her life was at risk (and went from not feeling well to very serious in less than 12 hours).....I will always spay my females once it is decided their show careers are over and they will no longer be breed (or I opted not to breed)......Just to big a risk!!

I pretty much feel like everyone else. I had my boy neutered in the first 6 days of owning him. I'm a volunteer for the SpcaLA, and I see dogs being returned all the time like they were broken or unwanted appliances. In addition to that, my bf's family is super against getting their animals fixed and have now had 2 "oopsie" litters (I know one for sure was on purpose) and have a total of 5 dogs. Keeping their males and females apart while the female is in heat is so much work and I know they get careless. What will they do when son impregnates his mom or his sister? They do their best to keep them separated, but they all live in the same house and it only takes a second for another "oopsie" to happen.
I don't want to be another reason for their to be an overpopulation of shelter dogs. Kaji was a nice calm dog before neuter, and still is a nice calm dog. Other than the hyperness from the pain pills, nothing changed.

Not trying to argue with you, but this particular comment caught my eye. Have you noticed how much us humans have tampered with this species already? We make them wear bows, wear clothes, separated them into breeds, and choose what food they eat. I think we're already very guilty of tampering with the canine species.

Joey is going to be 2 years old tomorrow (yay!), and Tank is 18 months old. They were neutered about a month ago. We feel very good about our decision, and we will ALWAYS have fixed pets.

Ok so then my question to you is how the heck would my dog get out of my home and make it to another female?? I will NEVER let my little man out of my sight, obviously the hypothetical female got inpregnated because her owner let her wonder around the neighborhood unattended!!! or perhaps the hypothetical female lives in a home with an unneutered male! i feel your question is stupid, who the heck just lets their little yorkies run around, these dogs are so wanted, id be afriade someone would steal him. There is no way he would get out my house, and if the hypothetical female found her way into my home, and got knocked up and i was aware of it OF COURSE!!! I would help, you shouldnt assume things about a persons character. IM DONE!

I too DO NOT agree with people who recklessly allow thier animals to breed, i find that to be unfair and wrong especially if they have no where to place the new born puppies. I do think pet overpopulation is an issue, but i dont think making it mandatory to get an animal fixed is the solution or rather, the only solution.
I completely agree with you and Ellie Mae! It is all about choice, and our rights as the owners of our dogs. I am completely against mandatory spay and neuter laws!

With that said, Some of my dogs are fixed and some are not.

Some dogs are too tiny to fix, some dogs cant get fixed because they are allergic to the anastisa or have a heart condition, some dog owners plan to show thier dog (like me) and some have religious/emotional views (also like myself) that make them feel like it is not the right things to do. I do not knock your decision like i said earlier, but i honestly feel that people should become more opened minded, and expand thier view of the issue further then what is spoon fed to them, by the organizations that promote this procedure. I feel everyone should look at the research. also those people that are irresponsible and treat their unbred dogs like puppy making machines will continue to do what they are doing despite any law, those evil people who own puppy mills do have a license to breed! so, having that license will not stop someone from being an irresponsible person. But yes as you said this is an issue that will always be controversial, until everyone looks at each others point of view.

There are irresonsible pet owners, some of them have fixed dogs and some of them have unfixed dogs. but as i said my problem was with you calling them all ignorant.

I had Chloe spayed when she was about 7 months old. I did it for two reasons: one, her health and two, convenience (no worrying about diapers or trying to keep her away from males). In my opinion, if you don't plan to breed the dog, there's really no sense in not spaying. With males, it's not as important to me as they can't get accidentally pregnant. I didn't have my male poodle spayed until he was about 7 years old and then only so he could stay in our apartment with us.

Even though I choose to spay my yorkie I cannot agree with mandatory spaying. It is up to the individual. For now at least individuals still have some freedom of choice. I said I believe it's a responsible thing to do and it's a healthy thing to do for my yorkie and I stand by that statement but for any state or federal government to regulate ones choice on this, mandatory rabies vaccinations and other personal choices and issues leads us down a slippery slope to where the state may issue regulations on other parts of our lives as well. I personally believe the government should back off our citizens rights and let us continue to live in a free country. Education is the key and personal beliefs and freedoms shouldn't be tampered with to the extend that they interfere and control so many aspects of our personal lives.

I don't have any males but if my girls weren't fixed, i am sure all the stray males in the n'hood would be hanging around. I have had a hysterectomy and feel i am healthier and love knowing that i don't have to worry about cancer from that area. Just because I had all those parts in my body, doesn't mean that i had to keep them there. I feel the same way with my girls.
Of course, you can do what you want. I hope your male doesn't turn mean and aggressive. Even Cesar Milan says that if an intact male doesn't breed like he is designed to do 2x year, they can get very aggressive with all those hormones and no release..just like humans. If you are going to show, he will have to stay intact.
The decision is yours of course. Research and ask questions and make up your own mind.
Cesar Milan is an idiot!

VERY well put! Some people just do not realize how it infringes on our rights, or how it can effect our other rights.

Farrah is getting spayed June 8th. Do you think it will help her become less spiteful?

Whom may I ask is "sympathizing" with "animal abuse"? That's quite an outlandish statement.

Not at all. People do sympathize with animal abuse. Don't you?
I'm assuming the person I quoted has sympathy for dog's who
are less fortuanate than her's, since she is a dog owner.
I do. My heart goes out to each and every dog that is mistreated
and thrown away like trash due to behavior issues that some have
no clue how to fix. Ceaser has saved countless dog's in rehabilatating
them and getting them into good homes. How do you call someone
like this an idiot? Maybe you don't like his methods but you have to
give him praise for the dogs he has saved from being PTS.
He also rehabilatates the owners so the two can function in harmony.

Hope that sums it up for you.
To call someone an idiot who dedicates their live to helping
dogs who otherwise would be PTS is just ridiculous.
