That's a great camera. I would also check out Nikon D3000 or, if you want the camera to have video, Nikon D5000). I tend to like Nikons in DSLR, but Canon's are also excellent camera. It really depends on what feels right to you, especially when you have it in your hands. I started with Canon, and still have two Canon film SLRs that I kept. That said, I find the Nikon operation easier and better for me. I like Nikon's kit lenses better than Canon's. Again, this is just my preference, because either manufacturer will take great pictures and that Canon also looks wonderful. Nikon has had a lot of great promotions this summer. The Nikon P6000 is also a very nice camera, but I think it's for someone that has a DSLR already that also wants to have a compact camera. If you aren't set on wanting to choose your own shutter speed, aperture, or want to use manual exposure, I think there are a lot of cameras far less expensive that you probably would be happy with. I also think for point and shoot, the Canons may be better generally. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't buy a Nikon point and shoot. I probably would look at them first, but from what I've read, Canon may be better (depending on which one you are choosing). The Nikon S6000 is also a nice camera. Both came out in February. I just don't know if they will offer you more than what you are using now in terms of catching the shot before your baby moves. I would try prefocusing with your camera.
