Lenses are confusing...I find them very confusing and only know a little about them - you wouldn't believe the details some people know about them, whew. I think BrowniesMom's lens is a Macro...isn't it?

The lens I used for Wylie and for those shallow-depth-of-field shots were all on my cheapo, fab 50mm 1.8 Nikon lens. The D90 actually comes w/ an awesome kit lens - the 18-105mm VR - that's a nice zoom range (close up and far) and has Vibration Reduction. It's not a honker, huge zoom lens either - which is nice. I also have a 60mm Sigma Macro (prime, not zoom) lens 1.4 (can open up to 1.4). You can use Macros not just for flowers/close ups but also for portraits and things like that.

Seriously, Bon - I'd realllly think about the lens limitations of the D5000 - my concern is you'd be disappointed later, just like I was in the D40 with not being able to buy/use the lenses I wanted to. You won't be able to use the Nikon 1.8 etc on that camera. But, if all that isn't a big deal to you...

The Rebel is a nice camera! I'd just say be cautious when buying from the NY camera houses bc a LOT of those are gray market, so the parts are not as good quality as they should be. :)

I've been thinking about this all night. :p It's turned out to be a good thing I don't have the $$ this month, it's making me think more about what I really want in a camera.

I just have one more question (at least until it's closer to time for me to buy :rolleyes:). With the D90, I can use all the same lenses as I could on the D5000, plus others?

yep macro That part is awesome In my new Len's I'm making sure it has it.

I think it's good too...so you don't regret the decision, whichever way you go.

With the D90, you have virtually *no* lens limitations...so yep, you can use all the lenses you'd use on the D5000, plus all the others.

Put it this way, the *only* real thing I didn't like about the D40 was the lens issue - it bugged the crap outa me - it was *the* only reason I was still looking at upgrading. So, I bought the D40, then ended up selling it for less than I bought it for bc the lens issue did bug me...and my hubby bought me the D90 so I sold the 40. If I had it to do over again, I would've bought a camera w/out the lens issue from the get-go.

Put another way, let's say you get camera that forces the lens issue....let's say you then reallllly want a 50mm 1.8 lens. Well, you can't use the Nikon 1.8 at $100. You must spend about $400+ for lens w/ a focus motor. With *just* that one lens...you've now spent enough to have bought an upgraded camera in first place (a camera w/out the lens limitation).

Ok, that makes sense. If I'm going to spend a lot of money on a camera, I want to it be & have everything I might want. QVC sells the D90 on a 3 payment plan, too. :D

I saw that too, and that's great!!! Also, you could see if anyone is selling a used D90 on Amazon...or...sometimes Amazon itself (*not* a vendor) is selling a refurbished one, which is then still covered by Amazon (not the vendor's policies).

You can use that lense but would just have to focus it yourself right?

Yes if the Len's doesn't have a motor in it You have to focus it your self.

I am researching online and just not finding what I'm looking for. So since I have the D5000, what do I need for the lens to say on it, in order for it to be Auto Focus?

Also What are some auto focus lenses I should get to get me started???

It must say it has MOTOR in it. & it must say for Nikon.

I am so so so confused on the lens's :confused:

The D5000 doesn't have a motor to focus the lenses in the body So the len's it self must have the motor. The d60 is the same way.
What lens are you looking for? I can help you find it. I might even have it in my favorites since i have a list of them.

You really don't need any other len's right now That one covers most of the picture's you would want to take.
The AF-S Mean's it Auto focuses.
