I'll attach some pics using a Prime lens that I set to a wide aperture (ie, low f-stop number like 1.8 or so)...see how the "depth of field" is very shallow? In other words, see how what is in focus is a very small area?

Wow those are amazing!

BonBon 10-22-2009 04:18 AM

Breny, your pics really look great! I was gonna quote you, but then I saw I'd have to quote everything you said. :p You sound just like me - I'm so impatient. I want it NOW, and I want to use it NOW. I don't want to wait for shipping & I don't want to spend time reading a manual. :D

So what do you think? Do you like it? I'm pretty certain I want either the D5000 or the D90. Tell me what I should buy! :p

No, you receive it right away :D. They charge shipping, if there is any, up front and your first payment. Next payment, not for a month. Love it! And, no gray market worries :). Actually, this time of year, their return policy may be extended thru end of January bc of holiday time...

Are ya gonna? Are ya gonna???? :p

Hee hee. Yes, I think I'm gonna!!! :D BUT, I have to wait for my Nov 15th payday. I've just spent too much money this month. :p At least I should have before the holidays get here. I can't wait!!

I have been shopping with them before they were even QVC and I highly recommend them. Right now anything you buy you have until Jan 31 to return but normally it is 30 days which I love.....You are always going to get a little more from them on computers etc. I got my bed (what's my number) my computers and my camera's from them. A lot of the major manufacturers go to them to introduce new products and in some cases you can only get it at QVC for a certain amount of time. When items are returned to QVC then they sold to people who put the items on ebay...so when I see something I like (cookbooks, clothes, purses etc) on QVC I always go over to ebay to see if it is there. I don't do this with computers, camera's and electronic items I have bought...

I say go for it...that is where I got my olympus e-450...just received it and have just started messing with it.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. :) I will feel a lot better buying from QVC than that one company I posted the link to.

WOO HOO! I'm so excited for you!

Okay, I'm just comparing the D5000 and D90 for you, here are what I think are the main points:

**D90 has "cinematic quality" video (LOL! Do we really need that? I mean COOL, but seriously....)
**same sensor (nice)
**same 11-point auto focus
**Might have same metering system, D90 might be slightly better (not sure on this one)
**D5000 has more ISO choices (100-6400) vs 200-3200
**Both have live view, but the D5000 also has this "tilt view" live view screen (if you look at that QVC link, and click on the add'l pics, you'll see it)
**both have Active D lighting

Okay...truly, I think what you're really paying for w/ the D90 (vs. the D5000) is the super-quality movie dealio. So unless that's a big deal for ya, I think I'd save the $400+ (for lenses!) and go for the D5000. Just my 2 cents. :p

Ann, you are the BEST!! :D I wouldn't have a clue which features I needed to be comparing. I'm going to go back to look at the QVC link for the D5000 but the "tilt view" sounds like a good thing to me. I certainly don't need cinema quality video, but I think the D5000 does video also? I'll make sure when I check the link again. Thank you!!! :D

ISO, metering system, active D lighting??? Whew, I've got a lot of learning to do!

Yes, it def. does video - and I imagine a very, very NICE one too :). Who needs more than that? I haven't even *used* the video on my D90, if that tells ya anything. Seriously, had the D5000 been out when I was considering the D90, I probably would've just saved the $400 and gotten the D5000 - awesome camera there!

I went & looked at the link, and actually tried to READ it this time instead of getting all excited & antsy. :p I think I could seriously love that tilt view!! :luv: I think of all the times that would've been so handy! And yes, you're right, it does have video (probably more & better than I'll ever need). I'm sold! I think this is a camera I can be happy with for many years. You've all convinced me to get an additional lens for zoom shots. Is there a specific one you recommend that's a good value? That's probably already something you've said in this thread, but I'll ask again. ;)

Wheee! I'm so excited! Breny, I'm so happy you started this thread! :D

Seriously, it'll take you and me 10 years to grow into our cameras, I swear, lol. There is *so* much to them to learn about! I don't think you'll be disappointed in the D5000 one bit, given all that it has - it's a truly awesome camera, and a great price too. Plus the 3-pay? Rocks!

As for "what toy next" (lol)? Def. get the SB400 flash via Amazon (or wherever) soon - it's the add-on flash so you don't have to use the camera flash (yuck!) - you can "bounce" the flash w/ the SB400. It's about $100 (xmas present from someone perhaps?).

As far as lenses...depends...do you want a zoom or a prime? A great prime everyone should have (imho) is the Nikon/Nikkor 50mm 1.8 - again via Amazon about $100, which is crazy for a lens - it is a "cult" lens, meaning everyone who has it LOVES it and can't believe how cheap it is. Blurred background CENTRAL, if that's your thing. You can get all kinds of bokeh (blur)!

But if you want a zoom...boy...you could go all sorts of places bc the range is so wide...I'd def. look into that one BrowniesMom has and see what she likes/dislikes about that lens. Do you want a zoom for like portraits/doggies or for taking pics of sports or ?

Wylie's Mom 10-22-2009 06:56 AM

Bon - I just read on DP Review that the D5000 does *not* have an in-body focus motor...therefore, similar to the D40/60, you're limited in lens choices. That's a bummer. :(

Let me explain more....

When I had my D40, I wanted to use the $100 Nikkor 50mm SO badly...but it won't auto focus on the D40 bc the D40 requires lenses that have their *own* focus motor to auto focus (you can, however, manually focus). So, for me to use a Prime lens that would auto focus on my D40, I had to go to a Sigma 30mm and the lens was about $460. This lens had its own focus motor though....

See what I mean about limitations? To some, that's no big deal though....

Like Breny said, probably 99% of the pictures I take will be of the pupsters. So, I want good lenses to get the best shots of them. Would the lens Browniesmom has be a good zoom lens for this?

I don't know anything about prime lenses. :confuse2: I'm crazy about the blurred background look, though. Do I need one for this effect?

What is the lens that comes with the camera for? I'm so confused.....

Did you take that pic of the squirrel by manually focusing your lens? EXCELLENT shot, by the way.

I'm not sure this would be a big issue for me. I would prefer to have one with the focus motor, but for the extra $$$ to buy one that has it.... I don't know. I would like to have one capable of video, and now I'm hooked on the idea of that tilt view on the D5000, but otherwise is the D5000 the same as the D40 or D60?

This is all really hard to explain via typing...bc it gets really hard to explain what happens visually. But, the kit lens w/ the D5000 is an 18-55mm lens...just basic, nothing special - not a lens you'd really go out and buy on its own, per se. It will totally fine to learn on though, and figure things out with etcetera. That's why some people will say, just buy the camera body alone, and then get the lenses you really *want*. Skip the kit lens.

Depends on BrowniesMom's lens...I'd see what she likes/dislikes. It's a nice lens. But, bc it's a Macro, it may be tough to use w/ the doggies bc if they move, *boom*, they're out of focus. That said, a Macro Zoom would be a super fun lens. You'd need to know if this lens has its own motor (I think with sigma lenses, this is designated by HFS or HFX or something like that?) (in Nikon lenses, you look for AFS lenses if you need the motor IN the lens).

It depends...do I have the right info regarding the D60? I was under the impression that the D60 was similar to the D40 in that it doesn't have an in-body focus motor -- is that correct? If it does *not*, then the 50mm could still be used on the D40/60, but would not auto focus -- you'd be stuck w/ manual focus.

No, the D5000 is not the same as the D40/60, def. not...I probably confused you, sorry. The D5000 is still beyond the D60 -- I mean, it has almost all that the D90 has, except for the movie quality and the focus motor issue.

Another option would be to buy a used D80....a great camera...but I don't actually know if it does video or not.

I'm sorry if this is confusing...but it really *is* this confusing when you're trying to buy a camera. Been there! :p

Yes you are right it does not have a motor in the body. So i would need one in the len's. is there a 50mm with a motor?

No, and that's what stinks. I don't know *why* Nikon is not making their 50mm in an AFS lens, it's so lame.

You'd have to get the 30mm Sigmathe 30mm Sigma , which is what I bought for the D40 (and still have) - it's a nice lens, but not cheap at all. Or, here is a 50mm in Sigma50mm in Sigma . Or, this Nikon 35mmNikon 35mm *might* be interesting...looks like it's AF-S?

That's why you're able to be such a huge help to the rest of us! :)

I still think the D5000 is the better choice for me both because of features and $$$$. But, I'm going to keep reading before I buy next month. If I find a sale on a D90 that puts it in my price range, I may decide to get it so that I'll have all the possible goodies. :D At least now it's narrowed down to these two - which is MUCHO better than where I was before.

I've been reading, reading, reading and talking with Browniesmom trying to learn more about lenses. I just think I'm getting it when something pops up & I get confused again.

Is there a big difference between the 55-200mm lens Breny bought and the 70-300mm lens? Which would be better for my needs?

Ann, what lens did you use to get that shot of Wylie?

I'm so sorry for all the questions. I have really learned so much, though!

Thank you!

I am glad your asking questions too!!! I am sooooooooooo confused when it comes to the lenses!!!

I will tell you I only took a couple pics with the lens in the kit and put the new one on. I like to be able to zoom when the dogs are not close to me and that way I can get better shots if they don't know I'm taking the pic :)

But I am so so confused on the lenses. So far I love this camera tho!!! WAY better than my normal point and shoots and I thought they were great!

That is great to hear!! I've pretty much talked myself into the same camera you bought. I just don't think I'd be happy with anything less. Do you have to manually focus the extra lens you bought? I used to have a Canon 35mm and I had to do that manually on every shot I took - I don't remember it being that bad. Of course, this was 20+ years ago & I understood technology then. :p

Those are some great pics you're taking! Very crisp, with the blurry background I like so much.
