You pick a live one from the tank and they club it over the head and scale it and gut it for you for free. We went home and she went to season it and get it ready to cook. Well apparently one of the muscles on the fish twitched (bc it was so fresh still) but it freaked out my mom and she screamed while her hand was inside it and it flung under the kitchen table.
Now if you can imagine, that kitchen was small with a small counter workspace. We had a diner style banquette right up to the wall of the workspace. And of course the table top kind of overlaps the seating area a bit. The fish got flung over the counter and under the table top, landing on the carpet! She was so freaked out that she wouldn' go retrieve it. My grandpa had to get it. I don't remember if she ended up cooking it or did my GP. I still tease her to this day.
Another memory was Thanksgiving. We are Chinese, so usually we don't cook and go out to a Chinese restaurant. For some reason this one year the adults decided to cook at one of my aunt's house. Their idea of homecooking was mashed potatoes out of a box, but the worst was, instead of ordering a Honeybaked ham, they bought a canned ham from the store, and put canned pineapple rings on it and baked it, thinking it would be the same. Funny thing was around that time the aunts tried to teach all kids how to cook.
Oh once my cousin and I tried to make Rice Krispy treats. We didn't have marshmallows, so we used what we thought was the next best thing, synthetic maple flavored syrup. |
