Your Mom's Weird Cooking (stories and Recipes welcomed!) inspired by This post about a mom's, um, "unorthodox" meat loaf technique, Need a great meatloaf recipe - Home Cooking - Chowhound What weird and wonderful (or not so wonderful) stories do you have to tell about home cooking surrounding the circle of your family and friends? tell me your funny stories, please! My Mom was full of them :D One that always stands out to me, is surrounding our garden and a certain crop of small new potatoes at the end of the season. My Mom decided she was NOT going to scrub and peel 100 potatoes for dinner (they really were tiny) so she loaded them all up in the family washing machine with a little dish soap and let 'er rip! Not only did it work, meaning they came out fresh and clean and void of dirt ~ they also came out PEELED!!! Gotta love my Mom!! Whoever said that "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" must have known my Mother :thumbup: |
Oops!! Here is the actual post I was referring to :D I actually love my mom's notoriously inept method (among many of her methods) of using an oven-safe mixing bowl for prep and using that for the baking dish - completely uneven result. practically raw in the middle and crispy on the outside. for some reason, very few people are attracted to the idea. go figure. |
My mom made garlic toast with wonder bread, margarine, garlic salt, and a piece of american cheese melted on top. No wonder my kids prefer her cooking :sidesplt: :sidesplt: (let's not forget the Miracle Whip, shall we ) |
This one is not about my mom (because she is an excellent cook) but my poor inept DH:D He is totally helpless in the kitchen (and generally inside the house period!!) He called me at work one day, he didn't know where the pots and pans were:rolleyes: He wanted to heat up a can of Chicken Noodle Soup. He called me back about 15 minutes later and wanted to know what kind of cheap cookware I was using...seems it exploded on the stove eye:eek: Dork had used the dome glass lid to the cookware to heat the soup in...needless to say I came home to soup and glass shards all on my stove and down in the stove eye pans...thank goodness it was before we had Jada and Bogie or they could have been injured:eek: |

Not exactly a 'recipe' per se but a friend of mine loves peanut butter dill pickle sandwiches. I haven't been brave enough to try it. |

We all live on the same property on the family farm..she has storage buildings..the old farm house..their house and my storage building packed. Last spring the shelves in my storage building were falling. I didn't know what she had in boxes on those shelves. I had to empty them off so we could repair the shelves...inside those 10-15 boxes were home canned food..green beans..grape juice (which had big chunks of stuff floating in the jar) and somethings I couldn't figure out what they were. Lisa can vouch for me...I texted her pics I was so disgusted:p They were dated early 1980's and she would not let us throw them out!!:rolleyes::eek: She went through each jar because she said some of them were still good!! OMG see why we are afraid to eat something she prepares |

That is just SO GROSS!!! It reminds me of my exploding mango loose poop down the cabinets can :sickie: The mango can was probably old too ~ but not from 1980!!! (come to think of it......if it didn't explode until 2012 she did better than the Indian Mango canning company :sidesplt:) |

Okay......I will try it ....:fallen: BTW....bread and butter pickles? Why the name?? |

Guess I found the answer! Bread and butter pickles got their name because bread and butter together are sweet. According to egullet.com, bread and butter pickles are named such because during the Depression, they were as regular a part of a diet as bread and butter. The difference between bread and butter pickles and sweet pickles is just a few ingredients. Sweet pickles use cinnamon, cloves, and allspice in a vinegar-sugar brine. Bread and butter pickles are made with turmeric. mustard, and onion in a vinegar-sugar brine. I looked for a definitive answer from some kind of pickle-expert, but wasn't able to find one. It seems as though the history of the name of Bread and Butter pickles is carried on through |

I like the ingredients as components. Not so much as a trio  |
m my Grandmas pork chops were the worst. She fryed them and she overcooked them and even the meat was crunchy. I still cant eat pork chops because of them. Everyone else in the family liked them but Id rather be eating dog food than my grandmas pork chops. She made alot of other things that were good though |

Speaking of eating dog food..... We had a little neighbor boy named Willy who would come over every day and eat our Irish Setter's kibble out of the garage!! He would even pee in out bathtub we had stored in there (don't ask me why, to either question ) We were mean kids.....we always sang this song to him :fallen: |
Y'all need to try peanut butter and bacon....yum! Ex-beau made me try that one. When I was pregnant i couldn't eat my mil's cooking (she's a great cook), anyway what i would do was buy a can of tuna, dump out the water, and replace it with lemon juice, then chow down on that! Thinking back, from then to now...sorry gross!! |

bacon and PB?? Maybe....... |

The peanut butter and bacon is really good though...trust me! |
When I was kid I used to make a peanut butter, pickle and cheese sandwichs. Can't eat them today if I tried. LOL |
Every once in a while my Dad would get a hankering for pork brains and scrambled eggs. The mere mention of pork brains grossed me out so badly I would get the heck outta dodge before he opened the can. Who could ever eat Pork BRAINS all mixed up with scrambled eggs? I suppose buttered toast finished off this delicacy. |

The title of this thread made me laugh out loud. Red neck cooking comes to my mind with my upbringing. Mountain oysters.....eeeew! Especially if they are not cooked to a crisp and are still just a little mushy. And my parents always do a lot of home canning. I couldn't stomach the pickled eggs. I always have to ask what's on the menu before a family dinner because you just never know. |
