| Can I make homemade beef stock? HELP :p So I'm making stew, and I've never considered using the juices afterwards, and I'm wondering if I can use the left over crockpot juices for anything. In my crockpot I have: stew meat carrots potatoes onions oregano butter (lots) water The meat will have been in for about 6-7 hours and the veggies 5-6 when its finished. Can I use the juices? If so what do I do with them? This was brought on by the bf, complaining we didn't have chicken or beef stock. I told him I refused to buy store bought stuff cause it's too salty and not healty. Well we never make whole chickens so I never thought of making homemade stock. Anyways, hope someone has an answer, I keep googling, and all the beef stock recipes call for bones.

| Beef stock is made by boiling bones. So if you just had stew meat, then you would have a broth not a stock. But yes you can use it. I would remove the liquid from the crock pot and bring it to a boil on the stove. Let it cool and store appropriately after that. I would NOT go from crock pot to freezer without a boil. As for what to do with it, how about a nice beef barley soup? Or beef vegetable soup? You could even make a minestrone soup. Those should be easy to find online.

| Also, I don't use whole chickens either. When I make chicken stock, I use chicken breasts (on the bone). Occasionally if I want a little heartier stock, I'll throw a drumstick or thigh in there too.

| Ok, so I will have broth then... that makes sense. So I would just boil it and then put it in containers and freeze it? I'm good in the kitchen but when its something I don't know well I get totally lost.

| You can also use it for gravy! I always use the leftover juices from a roast or chicken or turkey to make gravy to go with it I will usually add some chicken or beef Oxo (you can use other seasonings though), some soy sauce, salt and pepper, and corn starch or flour to thicken it.

| I wouldn't use butter in the crock pot. I'd add it in once I'm making the soup or whatever. I made some stock last time out of bf's discarded sparerib bones. So much flavor comes from bones, fat, and cartiledge. Then strain everything really good. Cool, and put in the fridge. When it's cold, scoop the fat layer off the top. It will be all gelatinous from the gelatin in the bones and cartiledge. Hee hee fun.
