Love Bizarre Foods with Capt Noonie

For those few people who actually know me, I love *weird* food. If it's a delicacy somewhere in the world, it must be good, right? For this game, say what is the weirdest thing you've ever eaten, and it even doesn't have to be something you liked, but if you did, extra points!

Also, say something that you tried and really hated!!!

Some of my *gross* favorites: uni (of course, don't even get me started on defending it, my baby is named after it, LOL), jellyfish, unagi, ikura, 1000 yr old egg.

My one and only *HATE* is sea cucumber!!! If anyone's ever seen this in the wild you will understand. It's an animal, not a plant. YUK!!!

One time we had went to a restaurant and I ordered a dish that had "tripe", not knowing what it was. It was the grossest tasting think and most of it ended up in my napkin. Come to find out tripe is "cow stomach", yuk!

Whoa. Are we the same person?

Favourites: Soondae (It's Korean, and it's delicious. It's cow intestine with clear noodles and vegetables stuffed inside. They steam it and it takes on this brown colour ... from the blood. Yum! ), raw shark, jellyfish, swordfish, baby squid (whole), raw octopus, masago (pretty much all sushi), .... I'm sure there's more, but I can't remember

Hated: sea cucumber (I was at a fish market in Korea and they take a living one out of this tub and cut it right in front of you and then you dip it in hot sauce. I immediately spit it out, which is very unlike me.)

Oh, and I love menudo.

The soup, not the boy group.

Hey we are like twins! Even our pups look like twins! I thought i had killed my own thread by posting "gross" stuff. I'm not the only one, yay!

Oh yea, I LOVE jellyfish! I am used to the Taiwanese kind. I haven't tried raw shark *jealous*!

My mom used to force feed me sea cucumber, i hated it even before I knew what it looked like. There are not many foods that I don't like, and this one I HATE! YUK!

I think just the two of us could go on for days....

Oh, no. You're no thread killer as long as I'm here. I can gross it up with the best of them!
I will try anything once (I draw the line with eating things still alive, though.), and I've learned a lot of really disgusting-looking food is some of the best stuff ever.

I only had jellyfish this last time I went to Korea. They had it cut in really thin strips and seasoned with something and with vegetables added. I didn't even know what it was at first. I thought it was a root, but when I heard it was jellyfish I just had to taste it. And I really liked it. I've never tried the Taiwanese kind but would like to. How do they prepare it?

You should definitely give raw shark a try. I guess it's not that common in Korea. I've only seen it once, and it was during an anniversary ceremony remembering the death of a friend's loved one. I always get to try the really weird food during those, though, because they go all out. Raw shark didn't really taste like anything to me. It was tougher than most sashimi, but that's all I can really remember about it (well that and I really liked it).

Just the look of the sea cucumber is disgusting. All spiny and slimy and cartilage-y EWWWWW.

That's funny that your mom made you eat it. How horrible! When my mom saw the look on my face, she was the one who told me to spit it out.

And you're right. We definitely could go on and on.
... and it looks like I did. lol

Yay! B/c my bf does NOT like to try *weird* stuff! He will not try uni cuz he says it looks like a tongue, well more for me! Speaking of tongue, lengua is fantastic!

I will try anything TWICE b/c sometimes the first time it could have been prepared wrong. Heh heh. And yes, I draw the line at eating anything that is still alive, but I'm sure if I had enough nerve to try it, it's prob good.

Well the Taiwanese style jellyfish is more spicy and a little more sour than the Korean style. It is also sliced thin with bamboo shoots and carrots also sliced thin. Yummy!!! I usually add more vinegar cuz I love sour! Well maybe not more spicy sometimes, cuz the Koreans love their chilies!

Oh do you eat crab and lobster *brains*? Hee hee when it's good it's so nice and sweet n creamy!

We are going to have to have a *gross out* contest! LOL

I'm not sure I've ever had uni! I'm going to have to try that the next time I go to a sushi restaurant. I really love toro. It's probably one of my favourite sashimi dishes. (I find liking gross-looking or gross-sounding things is really for our benefit. It always ends with more for us. )
I don't think I've ever had tongue! I totally want to try!
I have had pig's feet (which isn't that odd) and frog's feet (although I can't remember what it tasted like). I've had cooked snail, which also isn't that odd.
I've never had crab and lobster brains! Aren't crab brains tiny? Like the size of a pea or something? Well, regardless, I've got to add that to the list, too.
I've had raw crab, which is absolutely delicious. I get it at the Korean market and they spice it up to death. It's so slimy and YUM!
Have you ever had lamb fries? There's this book called the 1000 places to go before you die. When I lived in Oklahoma City, a friend there had the book and there was only one location in Oklahoma in the book. We went to Cattlemen's (I think that's what it was called) and the book said to eat their lamb fries. They're lamb balls.
And delicious. They cut it up and fry it to where it kind of looks like calamari. You dip it in this sweet sauce, and I have to say it's not that bad.

I think I've named all the gross things I've tried! So if you are able to think of more, I'm going to have to call you the winner of this gross-out contest!

Also, I forgot to add: I definitely want to try the Taiwanese way of preparing jellyfish. That sounds delicious.

Hmm ... now I'm hungry.

Oh man! You are in TX right? I'm sure there's lots of mexican places there, try a lengua taco! It's almost like the consistency of tendon or firm-ish fat, but tastes beefy, and since it's tongue (a muscle) no extra fat!

Well, uni is hard to find in the way it's supposed to be. The best uni in my area is from Catalina Island which is just off the coast of Los Angeles, so it may be hard for you to find. It should be moist, smooth, sweet and nutty. You know like how butter can be infused with garlic? It's like the texture of butter infused with nuts. Just melts in your mouth. It's better plain without soy sauce or wasabi, it just masks its real flavor. YUM!!! But word of warning, it's totally overpriced! Like $12 for a two piece order!!!!

Frog's legs I've only had once and I think they were overcooked, they tasted like rubbery chicken, so I'm waiting for round two.

As for lobster and crab brains, I don't know if it's actually the brains. When you steam whole crab and lobster when you open them up, that creamy greenish stuff, that's what I'm talking about. I'm sure it's some kind of innards or something.

I've never tried lamb fries, BUT I got my dad the 1000 places to see before you die book for Xmas two years ago. he is retired and travels like CRAZY now! He just got back from the great barrier reef! *Super jealous!!!*

Hmm what else... I'm gonna have to say deep fried "chitterlings". Small intestines of pork deep fried and sliced thin, served with garlic infused oyster sauce and ginger. i think all my favs are taiwanese food, it's what I was raised on (as breakfast food!)

MMMM I'm so hungry now!!!

Have you seen the Travel Channel show Bizarre Foods w/ Andrew Zimmern? That's what I wanted this thread to be about... people telling about their cultures "bizarre" food, but you are my only biter it seems... LOL

Yeah, I do live in Texas. I'm totally going to find a Mexican restaurant here that serves it. Shouldn't be that hard since there are thousands of them in San Antonio. It sounds delicious. I'll probably even make some people here try it and just won't tell them ... until afterward.

Oh man. My mouth is watering from you describing uni. Well, as long as I don't eat it every day, I'll take the price hit for the experience! I'll make sure to try uni whenever I go to a sushi restaurant so I can see where the best is here. Such a chore!

Lobster and crab brains sound disgusting! I can't wait to try it.

I'm jealous of your dad getting to travel everywhere, too! I want to get the book for myself, but I don't want to be sad when I only have one little mark in the whole book.
I've been to Korea so many times and there isn't ONE thing in that book regarding Korea. I've wasted my life seeing things that weren't worth seeing before I die!

I've never had deep-fried chitterlings. That sauce sounds so delicious. I've probably had chitterlings in menudo, though. I'm sure I would love it deep-fried, too! I absolutely love menudo. The meat is sooo chewy. So good. I am unbelievably hungry right now and all the great places with "disgusting" food are closed!

I'm just glad that we've managed to try such awesome food. Can you imagine all the people who miss out?

I don't think I've ever tried real legit Taiwanese food. I would love to, though. One of these days I plan on traveling all over the world and eat everything I can get my hands on. The flavours are just so unique to a country. To me tasting a country's food for the first time is like seeing a brand new colour.

Korean food is mainly kimchee and rice lol. They do have exotic foods, but every day eating is pretty ordinary, I think. I absolutely love kimchee and all spicy foods, though.

I love that show! He does eat stuff that I wouldn't dare touch. I just can't even think about eating stuff that's still alive. It makes me too sad!

I know! I'm surprised no one else is at least commenting. Even if they don't have experience with eating gross stuff, they could at least say "NASTY!" or something like that so we'd know they were paying attention.

Seriously! Why isn't anyone saying "gross" or "eww"? I guess YTers are too polite! come one guys! Comments!

Wow, I wish I could go to Korea, they have wonderful food! I *heart* korean bbq! Yes I agree, you need to eat the local food to really experience a culture, like seeing a new color.

Menudo is AWESOME! I think it's a different part of the intestine tho, but not sure...

Yea my dad totally travels like crazy. When I gave him the book, I had already marked a bunch of places he had taken us, like a thank you for taking me here type of thing. Ooh can't wait till I'm retired... hmmm 30 more years???

Um I think in Cali there's lots of different types of Chinese food (which Taiwanese is a "type" even tho they are separate, blah blah blah...) It's mostly cantonese which most people know as chinese, but there lot's more here in LA. If you come here, I'll tell you where to grub!!!!! Where I grew up here (San Gabriel Valley) lots of yummy asian food!!!

I'M SO HUNGRY!!!!!!!!! LOL

When I head to vacation in California, I'm definitely making you tell me where all the secret hide outs are!

I'm still hungry this morning for delicious food. Cereal just isn't cutting it.

Let's do a cultural exchange. I'll take you to Korea, you take me to Taiwan.
Umm ... after we rob that bank.
