| Weird ear chewing in Doxie So a friend of mine has 3 Doxies he rescued, one of them has a bad spine but still gets around ok (black one) and the other was abused daily(red one). Apparently the red one chews and licks on the black ones ear all the time. He asked for my help but I'm stumped on this one. I'm attaching a video. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this?? | I wonder if the black one's ear are yeasty or infected and that's why he obsessed with them?

| It is likely an OCD type behavior that some dogs get into when bored or unsure, conflicted. It's like the nervous things people do I think, kind of like shaking a foot or wiggling a leg when seated for a long time or when talking to another person and nerves kind of kick in. Some "experts" that write about it call is displacement behavior, I think is the term and it can be some type of comforting or energy-releasing attempt. Apparently it is pretty addicting and dogs can go on for a long time if it doesn't involve another being that will eventually grow tired of it and walk off or otherwise stop it. I, too, would be interested to know if there is anything going on with the chewee's ears and have them vet-checked. I guess it is possible that one dog could pass infection or bacteria, spores, whatever - to the other dog through this and that the ears could get raw from the prolonged dampness or licking in one spot. For a variety reasons, it is best to put a stop to it, even though the dog on the receiving end doesn't seem to mind it!

| I thought it seemed a little OCD too, especailly with the red ones history of abuse I wondered if it was some sort of calming habit, like a baby would suck on a pacifier. Thanks for all the help guys, this one was something I had never seen for sure

| OP, I sent you a PM too but I wanted to make sure you got this info. I saw this link and thought maybe it would help the little Doxie your friend rescued that has the back trouble: Lil Back Bracer - Reducing back pain for small dogs - Dachshunds, Weiner Dogs, IVDD, Back Brace Moo and Maddie Jo used to suck and chew on Mollie's ears (their sister) when they were all little. They never hurt her but poor Mollie ran around all the time with soaking wet ears! I always wondered if it was because her ears stood up and theirs don't Now that I think about it...I remember them doing that to Peanut too...Oh My! I may have a little gang on my hands |
