| new to yorkies okay this is going to be long lol I am so relieved to have found this forum! I am a stay at home mom of 2 girls ages 6 and 9 and have a deaf cat. I have always wanted a Yorkie they are so cute but i never could afford one (with papers and what-not). Until a good friend needed to part with her dear Roxy, and chose me and my family she is about 8yrs old () and very well mannered, house trained and all. But she is allergic to beef she has been on a low-fat, grain-free diet. I was told to get something along those lines. I have been feeding the cat Taste of The Wild since I've had him about 1 1/2 yrs. his coat is beautiful and he is very healthy. I was thinking of putting Roxy on it as well but not sure what formula to get. Now to my stressful problem... Introducing the cat to the dog!!! We tried doing it the husbands way first (even after i said it would be a disaster). Which was him holding the cat while the dog was free to walk around. Needless to say he got scratched and bitten. I felt so bad for it being such a stressful meeting for both of them. Roxy is familiar with cats however my cat doesn't get along well with other cats. I adopted him from the pet store and no one knew how he was with dogs. After everyone calmed down I waited a hour or so and put the dog in her kennel, in the middle of the living room. Then let Cane out of his room. Everything seemed to go ok, he took his time creeping closer and closer to the kennel. Then I put Cane back in the room and let Roxy out. When it was time for bed I had Roxy in her kennel and let Cane run around. He was very curious of our new addition but when he gets by the kennel (a foot or so) he hisses at her. Any tips on helping with this situation would be great. I really hope to be able to incorporate her into the family. I'm not sure what will happen to her if i am not able to kept her, plus it will make me sad. oh yea and the cat has been neutered and de-clawed on his front paws. P.S. Please excuse any grammar errors etc. |

| Welcome to YT. It's going to take some time for the cat a dog to work it out, but they will. Sense the cat has claws you are going to have to watch them when they are together until you are sure it is safe. You don't want Roxy to loose an eye or be scratched up. The cat can always get away from the dog by jumping up on something that the dog can't, the dog can't really do that, so just be careful. I think that all you can do is only allow them together when someone is watching for now. |

| Congratulations on getting your little Yorkie. As suggested above, it will take time, but you need to be very careful. I have a 3 lb. Yorkie that I never leave alone with the kitty. Missy Cat stalks her like a mouse. I have a 5 lb. Yorkie that loves to play with the kitty (10 lbs.) but I also won't leave them alone. I've seen Missy Cat do a body slam on Chipper. When I first got Chipper it was Missy Cat's goal to kill him. Eventually they have become friends, but I still am very careful. I have tall gates at various places in the house that keep the kitty separated from the doggies when need be. If you need to keep the kitty out of an ex-pen you can take a sheet and pin it over the top. I put the safety pins fairly close together. Keeps the kitty from jumping in. Obviously, others will have different experiences. Good luck.

| Thank you all who responded and for the warm welcomes!! I am trying to alternate giving each animal the "run of the house" the cat stays in my room with his box and food while pup runs around then after a while ill switch em up. keeping thier things in separate rooms and letting them roam around in shifts. however cane is smart and determined to open doors and i am almost positive he thinks roxy is food for him to hunt. he will lay at the door of the room she is in smelling and meowing. this morning after i brought her in from her morning walk he went all out ninja cat on the both of us scared the crap outta me and pup lol apparently i need to invest in some cat (baby) proof door knob covers. ill will keep everyone posted cant seem to find any other tips on the net its all the same things. *sigh* It will be a glorious day when they can live in semi-harmony lol |

| Sorry for the delay on responding. It's been 1 week tomorrow that we've had our new baby! She got pampered today and loved it I have posted some pics! She wasn't very photogenic but still cute as can be She is fitting in very well. I decided on getting her Purina pro-life salmon and brown rice food. Doing good on it, the pet store guy said it would be good for sensitive stomach and its good for older dogs. She has to have grain free and beef but seems to be doing fine with the salmon. Cane is not accepting her as well as i hoped. He avoids her and she avoids him lol I'm glad to not see so much of his "ninja" side *knock on wood* and at least they seem to be coming to some kind of compromise. My attention is the next hurdle.. my kitchen has 2 doorways he lays at one end and she is at the other when I'm cooking, just staring at each other lol Hope everyone has a great weekend and I look forward to coming around regularly soon as school starts! (I'll be on all day haha) |

| Aww Congrats on your new addition!! Also, Welcome to YT!! I think your cat will probably just keep away from him. It's probably good the kitty is declawed so the Yorkie can't get scratched. Have fun with the new one. You'll probably have 1 or 2 more in the near future
