I love African Greys too but knew they lived a long time and at my age, didn't want to risk a bird outliving me...so, that's why I went with a Quaker (they live about 20 years). Next to African Greys they are supposed to be the best talkers.
Yes I am thinking Mason may out live me too!
I can't wait till he starts to talk, I get such a kick out of that and spend hours on utube watching vids of ppls birds talking. It amazes me!

Congratulations! My good friends have an African Grey over 20 years, and an amazing talker. Gotta be careful what you say around them cause they can repeat it in your voice.... embarrassing sometimes.

Oh probably not, you'll have many happy years together....you're considerably younger than I am, I think? And, who knows perhaps I could outlive an AG.....people do live to be 110+ these days LOL...I can just see me now.....112 years old with a bunch of yorkies and my old bird....won't we be a sight?!?

Their talking is the funniest! Bonito learned his name first at almost 4 months old....then it seemed like nothing new, until one evening a few weeks later, my son and nephew were sitting in the living room, Bonito was chattering and all of the sudden came out with "Whadda ya doin'"...it was kind of freaky - just out of nowhere an entire sentence! After that he comes up with a new word or phrase about every week.

Mason is beautiful. I always wanted an African Grey. May I suggest a good source of information. Subscribe to Bird Talk magazine. They feature all types of parrots and other pet birds. Very informative information about diets, health, toys etc. I subscribed for 18 years because of PeeWee. Do you feed him anything besides fruits and veggies. I learned that sunflower seeds are very addictive and cause their feather tips to turn black. I feed Zoo Preem pelleted food with his fruits and veggies. He also loved whole wheat bread toasted. My grandmother had a yellow naped amazon that she got from a sea captain. He was already full grown when she got him and she had him for 50 years. When she passed my mom took him and had him for 20 years. He got a cold and passed. We were very sad to lose him. I am sure Mason will bring you many many years of joy.

Thanks! I will look into that magazine! I have him on a pellet diet as well and I am going to slow down on the seed, but not omit it. Right now he has the breeders pellets along with mine. I got him Gold N Oodles and he seems to like them. then along with fruits and veggies and other things as I learn. He enjoyed his scrambled eggs today! and I threw in some veggies

You may already know this but I wanted to say be very careful when cooking. If a non stick pan burns the fumes could kill him.

Awww your little hatchling is a beauty! I have a Yellow Crowned Amazon who is a doll and love birds.

I wanted to second Tortoisekeeper's suggestion on Bird Talk magazine - great resource. I also do agree to avoid non stick cookwear containing Teflon. Also, DO NOT USE FEBREEZE as I have heard that many birds dropped dead from being around febreeze.

Enjoy your 75+ years with your new baby!

Aww, how nice! We have two CAG's, I handraised them from a month old. I was just going to keep one, but they are both still here 5 yrs. later. One talks alot, the other jabbers, but doesn't really say much you can understand. Sweet Pea not only talks, but meows, barks, imatates the microwave, smoke detector, etc. We also have a blue and gold macaw that talks alot and 7 other birds. so along with all the dogs, I have no empty nest even though the kids are all grown and gone, lol. Wouldn't have it any other way Here's a few pictures of mine.
congratulations on your new baby!!

yes, no teflon around birds.

He is going to make me eat better since he needs so many fresh fruits and veggies! LOL

I love birds and have always wanted a parrot....I am looking to enjoying many years with him! (like 50 to 60 LoL)

I just wanted to share Here is a video I took on one of my visits to the breeders house while I was still visiting weekly.
YouTube - My First Project
The pictures are from my house now that he is home.
Mason is beautiful. I have a great lady on ebay that I buy all Boo's toys from. Much less expensive then in the petstores and I have to look but I think she is involved with rescue. I'm pretty sure because I almost always buy just from people who donate back into a rescue. Also, I have some great recipes. A big is using Goya 16 Bean soup. I clean and boile the beans until done, let them get cold and I add fresh broccoli, corn, carrots and really any other veggie they eat and I put them into baggies and freeze them, and take one out daily for breakfast for Boo. At night I give her snacks of fresh fruit and I always keep a dry mix in her cage of laborers, pellets, some Abba, nuts, and dried fruits and veggies. I have a great book for parrot recipes too, if you ever want any. Congrats on Mason. Elaine

Thanks!!! Thats kinda how the breeder fed him and sent me home with some of her mixes al ready made up. I just went out and bought the 15 bean soup mix and plan to soak the beans and then cook them and mix in some veggies and do the same.

I am keeping his pellets and seed in there full time...well actually I am cutting down on the seed and hoping to use it more of a daily treat. Then I have this veggie crisp mix I bought that he eats on my desk. Lots to learn! LOL

He's so cool tho.

do you have the ebay link? I've bought his perches and playstand from there and tonight I bought a window perch!

A Bird Toy - Parrot toys and Toy Making Supplies is her website and on there should be her links. I've been buying from her for about two or more years now. There was another person I bought from but she has since stopped selling. I'd love to see the perch you bought. I'm looking for a nice play gym for Boo. I like the Java and coffee wood. I think it's a little nicer then the Manzanita. I have a gym in her room, made of a plastic with the ortho branches, but would like something natural for the family room. If anyone comes across anything that is nicely priced please let me know. The gyms are so expensive. Like $400. thanks. Elaine
