| It's just a different kind of black widow called a red-back or something along those lines. GO KILL IT RIGHT NOW! They're very poisonous & can be deadly. We had that kind (with the back stripe) around our pool when I lived in NC. If we'd lift up one of the stones of our walkway they'd all go flying out (then I go darting into the house )

| Well, it is good to have confirmation from you. I didn't know if they were in the U.S. or not. Now we know that they are . So you better run, Jenn. Kill them and keep the kids and dogs away from 'em if they find any more. Sounds like they like to be around water.

| ARRRGGGHHHHH! I HATE spiders! I'm sooooo glad I like in the UK, we don't get spiders like that here! Well, unless they get shipped over in fruit and veg but it happens rarely!

| I've never seen a spider like that! I just killed a male and a female black widow here (and we've got MONTHLY pest control )....BIG ones too! I HATE them. So now I'm on the lookout for them. One good thing is that their webs are pretty obvious, but I even hate their webs. Ket us know if you find out what kind it is...now I'm going to be looking for them too, LOL.

| omg..it does look like that redback. I'd call a pest guy. If it is and its around your pool, then I'd have it sprayed. Also you might call the health dept. and see if they've had any reporting of them??? BECAREFUL! |

| Thanks everyone for the great links! I am still looking at them..... Do you really think it is a red back from Austrailia??? I didn't read anywhere where they have the hourglass on the bellies AND the markings on their backs....did anyone see that anywhere?? This spider had the markings on both sides....it isn't fat like the black widows that we have killed before (or as fat has the red back looks). Also, we had another one a few weeks ago that had the same markings (on its back and belly) but with white outlining it on it's back...it wasn't fat either like a black widow gets, but long and skinny and just...eek, evil looking! We are having everything sprayed this weekend while we are away! Oh, and I did kill the spider after taking pictures of it. My Dad said that he seen one at their cabin a few weeks ago....it scared him because he thought it was as black widow and thought...why does it have markings on its back. He killed it too....he normally doesn't bother with "mother nature", but he did for this! I think living in the boonies like we do, we see strange things that most people don't......like, we have seen a black snake with blue stripes and a black and yellow striped garter snake that was over 4foot long and has big around as a garden hose and its head was shaped strange (not smooth round).....crazy!!!!!!!! AND SCARY!!! Just wanted to add: I have goosebumps after looking at all those pictures.....eek!!!! YUCK! I think I will forward my pictures to our local county ext. office and see what they say......

| From what I've read on those sites and wikipeda, it does seem to be one. If you notice the second back leg is smaller as in the pictures. The males have the white on them. They are closely related to black widows. I also gather that they have hitchhiked to other countries. I would try to bring it to some college or notify the department of agriculture or something. It's important for the children in your area to know not to mess with them. |
