I know this off topic here but I need to get this out there. I live on the gulf coast all my life been through some tough storms but Katrina really hit home. we stay and rode her out we don't live right on the water about 35 miles away. If any of you have Horses PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN A BARN OR STALL UP, you need to turn them loose duck tape your name and number on there butt, we bought dog tags for our. after Katrina we had national guards man come up to us and ask us for help with a horse down the road, his owners had left town like most did they had left this horse in his stall tie up the barn fell on top on him he had one broken leg and no telling what else all we could see his neck and a front leg, the guardsman are not allow to put down a animal on private property, I had some ace so I gave him a shot, it relax his pain my husband went back to the house to get the gun. The owners couldn't get back to their house for a week, Please don't leave any animal cage up. Katrina was one of a kind I hope but you never know until they blow in .

I hate hurricane season, and I don't evem live near any water, except for the lake. But we get a lot of bad weather. Good luck to you guys for theese next couple months.

I don't like hurricane season either, and we don't live near the water, but my daughters lives right on the beach, and it scares me to death.

I would love to live on the water, but I would be terrified of hurriances. Where does your daughter live?

We just bought a house on the west coast of Florida, and were given detailed lists and instructions for evacuations. Since I am on oxygen and a
CPAP machine at night, I would have to go to a special needs shelter. I can take my hubby to that shelter, but not my dog.

Well.

We went right out and bought an "evacuation kit" for our little Higgins! It's a 22' class B+ little motorhome ready to take us ALL out of harm's way!

That was VERY good advice about horses and any domestic animal that is in a barn or other enclosure! Let's all hope this hurricane season stays quiet.....

If you let them loose wouldn't that be a danger to people (cars, etc.)?

leave them loose in their pasture, believe me after a storm blows in nobody goes anyhwere the roads are in passable for days sometimes weeks. you have down powe lines and trees , boats, parts of houses litter the streets. it was 4 days before we could get to main road 5 weeks without power. most of the time animals will come back to there homes afterwards if they do get out. thats why people that leave can't get back home.

CT just passed a law (after Hurricane Katrina) that shelters have to accept house pets. My husband said he would never leave Conner, so if a hurricane was coming our way, we were going to get in the car and get out of town. Now we don't have to worry.

I live in CT (bordering RI) and they say we are due for a big hurricane. I hope not. I am hoping for the best for all those in Florida (my parents live there) as well as all others who may be in a hurricane's path.

they have passed that too here I think after Katrina, but we have large animals so we can't leave them here alone. But is very scarey when 911 calls and said don't call us if you have a problem we will not come. it's a catch 22 for us.

We spent 2 weeks in our 5th wheel after Rita & it sure came in handy. We could get back to our house after a week but no electricity. You don't live in TX in the summer without airconditioning if you have any choice at all

I think all of us with "evacuation kits" ought to head for the same campground and have a nice cookout and meetup!

Rode out two bad hurricanes in CT in another life, so we have a bit of experience. Don't want any more experience, though......

We have named our kit "Camp Laffalot IV" so look for us when you're camping!

We could get back to our house after a week but no electricity. You don't live in TX in the summer without airconditioning if you have any choice at all
