Our Blessings R Many Donating Member | Mandatory Spay/neuter Law In Calif. Right now all I can say on this subject is this, please Big Government leave us alone. We have grown old and abided by each and all laws up until now. My visit to get our mail today was not pleasant. I pray that other states do not follow the example of Calif. in the mandatory spay/neuter law. I hope that people in other states will be observant of the laws that are being imposed, it can happen, it has happened here. Upon reading what I received in the mail today, animal control couldn't even get the information correct from last year when I licensed ours also couldn't even get the information correct on the micro chipping I am so strongly opposed to laws that make this mandatory. We did not have ours spayed last year, we don't want to! Many years ago we had two dogs spayed, each at seperate times, we went through years of each being incontinent, not good, 14 years one and almost that long with another, back then I said never again. The spays were done by different vets, their comment was it and anything can happen. We had no health issue due to not spaying Cassie or our Gretta, they were always healthy. Sorry I have to bring this up again but it is just so frustrating to me and I truely resent being told we have to do something which I feel is our right to make this decision and not the State or the county that enforces such a law. This is one instance, to those people that are responsable pet owners and don't let their pets astray, we are paying the price, of those pet owners that are not caring and unresponsable to the dog and cat population. To allow a dog to run loose and about that is being unresponsable. This law is not a good law. Yes, I do understand the pet population is landing a lot of dogs, cats in the animal shelters but those that are ending up there and being euthenized are not most of the time because they are pets PETS THAT ARE LOVED AND CARED ABOUT ARE NOT DISCARDED TO AN ANIMAL SHELTER. Posting this is not something I want to debate it is merely our expressing how we feel on this subject, I know there are many, many people here in Calif. that feel as we do but if this needs to be put forth then it is our belief to let it be put on a ballot and let the people within the state as a voter make this decision, not a few elected officials pass such a law. These are both our opinions Patti and Jack |

| I don't think that a blanket s/n law is the answer, although I don't know the details and the exceptions and all that. The problem is how do you stop people from breeding their dogs? Mine are both fixed and I feel that is my personal responsibility as a dog owner to have that done. My vet agrees that it is healthier. But I also know true breeders (people who show/compete and breed) who obviously choose to keep their dogs unaltered. In that case we need enforced leash laws. But I also wish that people had to get some kind of license to breed their dogs. If they let their dog mate and don't have a license then they should pay some penalty or something. I don't want it to be monetary, because that's not really fair, but then you have people who just dump them at the animal shelter because, wow, puppies cost a lot to take care of! I don't know the answer, but I know have had MANY people ask me if I will stud out Loki. OK first and most obvious, he is fixed. Second, he is TWELVE pounds and has a luxating patella. And third, I have been asked to breed him to a Yorkie-poo, and Poodle and some other breeds. They say he is pretty and smart - and I agree. He is a beautiful dog and he is the smartest dog EVER. But he is NOT breed standard. He was sold with limited AKC registration. He was meant to be a PET, not a stud. Of course part of me would love to know I could have another one just like him, but I'm not a breeder and I'm not willing to take on that responsibility. Plus, I'll never get one *just* like him. My point is that if people aren't required to spay and neuter, then they need to be required to have a BRAIN and not just randomly breed their dogs. I don't know the answer, I just wish people would act a little more intelligent sometimes.

| I'm all for reducing the number of animals in shelters but I've said it before and I'll say it again.... THIS IS NOT THE ANSWER! Everytime I read the details and the wording of the proposal it get's me so angry. It will not change what is going on in the shelters and only punish the people who are already complying. It seems, especially in California, more and more Laws are being put in place that has a "Big Brother" overtones to it. Take the no smoking ban for instance. No smoking on the beaches, parks or even out side of a bar or any enterance to a building (I believe the law says 10 feet from a entry way). Non Smokers think it's great but that's not the point is it? Little by little we are being told what we can do, how to do it and when to do it. The new propsed law is another step in this direction, and I am in oppostion to it. If you look at any of the shelters websites in CA, most of the dogs up for adoption are pit mixes. Hmmm.... and let see, most pit owner (not all mind you but) are in low income bracket. Again, this is Southern California where pure breds dogs, like cars are a status symbol. And with money (or appearace of) comes bragging about their pets, which includes vets which equals responsible ownership. Cats? That's a whole different category. There are so many feral cats & kittens, add to that people who let their pet cats roam free, that have not been neutered or spayed filling up the shelter system. Evey time there is a pet adoption at the local Petco or PetSmart, majority of the animals are cats and kittens. And this is my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
