Atkins Diet Vindicated? Here's part of a news article that came out after JAMA published a study done at Stanford: "Atkins diet vindicated? Well, maybeBy VIRGINIA ANDERSON Cox News Service ATLANTA - Dieters, don't throw out the bacon yet. But you might want to pitch the white bread and soft drinks. There's been a flurry of publicity in recent days about a study that indicates some of the method behind the much-maligned Atkins diet - which allows for an abundance of meat, fats and some vegetables but severely limits carbohydrate intake - may work best for some dieters. In an article published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers from Stanford University reported that the Atkins Diet resulted in more weight loss over a year than three other diets - the Zone Diet, Ornish Diet and LEARN Diet. But the study's lead author warns that the research does not mean dieters should go on the Atkins diet." There's more to the story though (http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/living/16857417.htm) -- like almost none of the participants sticking with the diet for the year of the study! Hmmmmm....... But it is good news for those following the low carb diets. I try to stay low carb but not to the point of Atkins. I am doing NS right now to get to goal and then will stay on a fairly low glycemic index diet on my own. |
Went for my 8 week weigh in today - lost 5lb this week. So my total is 2 stone 6 lb. :D |
That is great!!! I have lost one more pound...they are tight, but I can get back in my size 6 Nautica jeans! Yippee!!! I think 9 more pounds and I will be happy! |
I think that it is a good idea to go "low carb" but not adkins, or should I say not "high protien". If you do not consume any sugar or carbs your body will go into a state of ketosis that is when your body burns its own fat for energy. I think that for some people it is ok but it made me very sick. Also high amounts of protien is hard on your kidneys and liver. You can still be on a low carb diet without eating alot of meats or protiens. |
Ketosis is what the atkins is all about as it burns the body fat. Thats how Im still losing 4lb - 5lb a week. You do have to make sure your drinking enough water though - you need to make sure your drinking at least 3 litres of water a day. Ketosis is also what stops you feeling hungry too. |

If the diet is followed correctly, ketosis takes about 4 days to get to. |

I'd love it! I'll pm you. Is there any certain ones in there that you've tried and liked? |
I would love to join you in the low carb diet but I need a break down of what carbs to stay away from or limit myself to. I also heard if you cut off all carbs after 6 pm that helps too. I had a c-section 8 months ago and I'm heavier now then I was when I was prego. I cant even fit into my my jeans i wore when I was prego except for 2 stretch type jeans. Well i've worn those so much that they are starting to wear thin. I'm thinking of dieting pills only to control my eating habits again because w/ my on going 2 yr battle of divorce and my soon to be ex hubby having my son because he convinced the mediator that my newborn sons health conditions maybe to extreme for me to handle in az ( i moved from cali ) at the moment. well not even a month after i moved here it was all settled. unfortuantly my sadness and emptyness has been comforted with food and chocolate. I was never a big eater so this is hard for me cause i'm wanting to eat all the time and i never ate a lot of chocolate on on occasion like once a month maybe and now i have bowls full of hershey kisses, reeses cups, whoppers, m&m's and mini m&m's, chocolate chip cookies, oreo klondic bar. See i need help i'm miserable. it also doesnt help that my relationship w/ my bf that i have my newborn with isnt going as well as it used to. The whole divorce battle thats should have been finalized a year ago has finally taken its toll. He goes out w/ the guys to weekend flings and leaves me home w/ the baby. i dont work cause my baby was a preemie and is behind in his milestones so now i have state approved therapist coming to my home to help me out with him to try to get him back on track so i cant work. All in all i'm miserable I guess. From the outside looking it its a great relationship and everyone thinks i'm so lucky and would love to be in my shoes, yeah great baby a house that my bf pays for and all the bills i get to stay home not work and take care of baby.. ya would be great if the relationship was great w/ it. there's more to vent on but i'm afraid i guess i gotten off track of the carb diet.. sorry... but its my reason why i'm eating so much and now disappointed in my appearence and looks. I dont like what i see in the mirror and everytime i try to control my eating i'm good one day then eating tons the next. :( HELP Quote:

The rule of thumb I follow is no bread, no sugar, no potatoes, no pasta. You can eat all the meat you want. As far as veggies, the greener the veggie, the less the carbs. Most foods you buy, except fresh, have the carbs listed on the packaging. A menu for the day while in the induction phase of low carb eating might go something like this: Breakfast 3 slices of bacon or sausage 2 eggs, prepared however you like them Lunch Tuna salad prepared with mayo & dill relish on salad greens if you like Dinner Grilled Steak or Chicken breast Steamed broccoli salad with low carb dressing For the first two weeks or so, I kept my carbs under 20. This puts you into ketosis - that is where your body starts burning stored fat for energy because you are not consuming enough carbs for energy. If you do it right, you will see the pounds start to melt away. Oh and most important...DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!! This will cause the weight to drop off even faster! Good luck! Hope you can make this diet work for you! Read the whole thread...there are lots of good ideas in here! |
On ketosis - you need to make sure your drinking at least 3 litres of water!!! |
How are we all doing??? :D Anyone still hanging in there? I'm down a total of 50 pounds now!:happyboun |
I have been cheating on the weekends...and now it carries over into the week! :thumbdown I gotta get serious about this again...Way to go on that 50 pounds tho!!! That is great!!!   |
I lost 30 pounds on Weight Watchers about 5 years ago. I like it because I took a nutrition course while I was on a sabbatical. Since you can eat whatever you want on WW, I ate very healthy food, did portion control and went to the support meetngs because I firmly believe that if nobody knows you eat it, it has no calories. I've pretty much maintained that weight - upped it by 3 pounds - it had gotten annoying. Of course, you have to cut carbs, but not entirely. In fact, I'm a little over my 130 lbs and have gone on a pasta, fat free butter, salt and garlic dinner regime. For some reason, this works for me, if I do portion control - about 1/2 plate. Everyone's body is different and you have to figure out what food groups work for you and make you feel strong and healthy. You should never feel hungry. I learned a lot and found that it's pretty easy to eat healthy: 6 portions of carbs/day (portion=1 piece of bread or 1/2 cup of carbs - use low fat, whole grain, fiber-filled, etc.) I'm pretty sure low carb diets provide an energy source instead of carbs. 3 -5 portions veggies = 1/2 cup each 2 fruits/day = small apples sized portion - some fruits are more fattening than others 2 portions protein/day = cooked - palm size, or the size of about 3 meatballs some meats are healthier than others, fish is good, peanut butter (low fat), etc. -doesn't have to be meat. Healthy fats - I use flaxseed oil which contains the omegas. My hair, skin, etc. were really awful on a lo3 fat diet until I started the fat supplements. It's like giving our babies Missing Link - what a difference it makes. WATER - for some reason, water really works and it's not because you pee a lot and then weight less. I really think if you go on a low carb diet until you get to your goal weight and then follow a healthy way of eating, it can work. I think the hardest psrt is making the cdommittment - it took me 3 years to get ready. |
By the way, how cool is it that dark chocolate is now considered healthy? I have 2 squares/day and have to see if I start to gain. I was 136 lbs. in January, now I'm 132.5. 2.5 more pounds to lose. I hope the chocolate doesn't add poundage. I LOVE CHOCOLATE!!! Judy |
O.k. ladies...I'm still on the lo carb bandwagon here. Where is everyone lately? Did we all lose all the weight we wanted and just disappear?? Anyway...I have a question. Everyone says 'drink water, lots of water' but how much exactly? Since I was little I heard drink 8 glasses a day...o.k...what size of glass? Is that 8 - 8 oz. glasses or 8 - 12 oz. glasses or what? I drink bottled water and each one is 16.9 oz. I think...if I drink 4 a day am I getting enough? |
I'm still here!:p I thought I was alone and talking to myself:p I've lost 50+ pounds. I started adding a little more carbs and I was still losing 2 pounds a week consistently. But I started exercising as I am needing to tone up as you can imagine and I stalled a bit, I HOPE it's because I'm building muscle as my clothes are fitting super nice. Since I have cut out all sodas and only drink water, I am amazed at how much I CRAVE water. I drink atleast 4 bottled waters a day, but sometimes I drink more. I think your body tells you what you need. |
No...you're not alone, I'm still out here! Congratulations on your loss...that's major! How close are you to your goal? I still have a few to go but at least now I can fit into my shorts and jeans that I couldn't wear last year. I think if I lose about 5 more I'll be able to fit back into my Lucky Brand jeans...they're my favorites...I've missed them! I really want to start walking again but my husband can't walk like he used to and I really don't want to go alone. Maybe we could drive over to the mall and he can have a cup of coffee while I walk. I'll figure something out! |

Thank you!!! My goal is to be the weight I was when I got married, which is 20 more pounds. I wanted to be that weight by my birthday in August. I think I'm going to do it. I'm pretty proud of myself, and I can't believe I'm actually successfully doing this... |
How are all you ladies STILL doing? Still losing I hope! My sis and I are going to start Weight Watchers. I have about 10 pounds I would like to lose. My problem is that I will have to eat MORE food than I eat now...I know my problem is not eating enough and my body running slow because it does not have anything to do! Anybody else doing the Weight Watchers? We are getting the points calculator...it seems like a pretty neat gadget! |
Just, please, everyone be careful and please use moderation. Low-carbing can lead to eating disorders, obsessive weight loss and all kinds of things. I know first hand, my friends. There are even studies on what excessive low-carbing can lead to. Just use moderation! We do need carbs for our body's very function, so don't go overboard...as low-carbing is notorious to lead to... :D |
I'm still low carbing, it's been a year this month that I started :D I'm doing very well and almost to my goal...It's funny, i'm very used to eating like this and actually miss it when I do go off of it for a day or two, which I do every few weeks. |
