| Powwow I took my granddaughter to the Austin Powwow today. We had such a great time! My husband usually goes too, but he was feeling badly today and couldn't go - so just she and I went. She's 10 years old and she really enjoyed herself. She asked lots of great questions about the dancers and their clothing, the singers, and the different dances they did. She and I even danced in the intertribal dance! We looked at ALL the jewelry and art and then we ate Indian tacos. My husband and I have been going to powwows for many many years now - we both just love the music, ceremony, singing, and dancing. Does anyone else enjoy going to powwows?

The dancers wear different styles of dress, e.g., fancy dancers, grass dancers, fancy shawl dancers, buckskin dancers. Everyone must be in the appropriate dress to dance and many dances are competitive. Sometimes there is prize money and/or other prizes for winning or placing in the competitions. The different styles of dress are absolutely gorgeous and the dancing is magnificent. There are also singers who drum and sing for each dance. The singers sit in a circle around a drum and all beat the drum and sing the words in native tongue while the dancers dance whatever particular dance is indicated by style of dress (fancy dance, buckskin dance, etc) - meaning that all the fancy dancers dance together, all the jingle dress dancers dance all together. It is so wonderful to sit and watch these talented folks. Here is a link to the Austin Powwow site which has more information about powwows. http://www.austinpowwow.org/index.htm

| Not yet I haven't been to one yet but really want to take our fifth wheel to a campground near here that has them a couple of times a year. I think my 2 grandchildren would love it but not sure how much Little Bit would appreciate it. Thanks for reminding me. |

That's a great idea - I know your grandkids would love it. We took our 5th wheel to Gallup NM a few years ago for the 3 day Intertribal Ceremony. We had to leave our dog (before Yorkies) in the trailer - too many strange things to bark at. A cute story - our dog at the time was Jack, a Jack Russell terrier. We were in the campground, when a Indian man walked by. He looked at our Jack and said, "Those dogs run like a bullet" - so from that day on, our Jack's Indian name was "Runs like a bullet". My husband is part Indian, so he was tickled pink for Jack to have an Indian name!

COOL! My husband doesn't know his tribal heritage - only that his Indian ancestors came from Oregon, Arizona and Oklahoma. If I knew how to make fry bread - I'd gain so much weight I couldn't get through the door!!! I love it THAT much!!!
