| Laptop Questions (WiFi, Security, etc) Hi (again) We got my daughter a laptop for Christmas (last Christmas!!!). She has mainly been using it to do your school work CD's (while we travel) or play games, etc. We were wanting to get it set up for WiFi, but I haven't checked it out yet. Does anyone know anything about this? We also heard that the security on the laptop is at greater risk than the desktop, so I was curious as to what protection would be best for the laptop - do they make such a thing as Laptop (wireless) protection? Thanks so much! Sorry to sound to "techno-dumb", but I have been out of the "tech-scene" for years.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I just got my dtr a dell laptop and after a week of trying and her friends who knew computers trying to get the wireless router working so we could get the interenet from out desktop, I hired a guy to come set it up. He told me over the phone he knew what the problem was and it would only take 15 minutes and the charge would be 75.00. I was desperate so I said ok. Well he was here 2 1/2 hours and finally after 4 calls to Aol, 2 to Dell and one to the wireless router vendor we got the one thing we needed, some IP address pf the AOL modem and that's all it took. But he still only charged me 75. It's been great ever since. We did setop a secure network so that someone sitting in front of our house or a neighbor can't use our signal or something like that. This guy did say wireless is less secure.

| We got a local computer repair guy to come to our house and set it all up with high security. He is the same guy that does the computer setup and maintenance at our office. You can list the websites that you want to allow your child to visit and the computer guy can lock out any questionable sites that you don't want her to have access to. He set ours up through the cable TV. I am a technological idiot so that is about all that I am qualified to share with you. On the other side of the coin, however, I can tell you that we absolutely LOVE having WiFi!!! We put off doing it for a couple of years because of the expense, but it got to the point that we were all fighting over the internet and "calling it first" so I bit the bullet and called our Computer Guy and now we can all surf on the internet at the same time! Now that we each have our own wireless laptop it is very liberating! Once you do it, you'll wonder how on earth you ever got along without it. You'll appreciate the ability to be on the internet while you are on the couch in front of the TV, or setting it in the kitchen on the countertop while you are cooking in the evening. You can even sit out on the back deck on Sunday Mornings and read YT while you drink your coffee!!! I hope this isn't too lengthy and that it helps in your decision making process.

| Kriston - how much does it run for WiFi? I guess I need to call around to some local places and get everything set up (well, see how much and how secure everything will be). We only have the one desktop and then the laptop, but so far, there has never been any issue with who is on the computer....course, DH stays away from it, unless he has been doing stuff for his business. Then, I try to restrict my "tween" daughters time online and where she visits. So, far.......it hasn't been a problem. I just think the WiFi would be good when we are traveling, but I am just afraid of the security. I have seen so many people using theirs everywhere and they don't seem to be worried.....maybe I am just a freak about that! Thanks for all the information!
