I myself am absolutely horrified at what is happening over in China. I am Chinese American myself and since I got my little Guinness, I've noticed that many Chinese people that are from mainland China are afraid of dogs. If my yorkie got closed to them, they would try to push them away with an umbrella or whatever they are holding. At first I didnt quite understand why they were so rude. My yorkie is just 5lbs! what harm can it do?

I then later found out that in China there are a lot of stray dogs and many of them are excessively aggressive where they would attack every person they see. Many people have been bitten by a dog thus dogs have a bad rep over in China. It is also very hard to own a dog in China. The govt requires dog owners to pay a hefty fee for a license and a year tax that alone is more than the cost of buying a dog. This is a reason why in chinese culture, owning a dog is a symbol of being rich. so is a love/hate relationship in the chinese culture with dogs.

omg! I feel like crying. I'm litteraly SICK to my stomach after reading that! I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread.

If anyone tried to touch any of my babies with ill intent, their face would be permenantly disfigured! UGH! Makes me want to go to China and save them all myself! and 63 cents to kill their dog?! If someone was going to kill their dog for a few cents, the poor things are probably better off dead anyway! Though as much as I hate to say it, if I had to choose between my dogs getting beaten to death with sticks, or me killing them, I'd probably have them put to sleep. then at least they wouldn't have to die that awful death.

You are absolutely right... but being a communist country that doesnt even care much for its people... they are not going to care much for animals either. Its pretty sad...

Why kill those poor pets, when the government could be supplying vaccinations for the people??!

I am afraid that they would have to shot me before I let them do that to my pets!

Is there anything anyone can do about this????

I read this article this morning with tears in my eyes. Ignorance is the reason for this massacre. The Chinese only vaccinate about 2-3% of it's dog population. Therefore they are probably going to have an epidemic on their hands soon.
They chose to kill these dogs inhumanely, when all they have to do is take preventive measures. There is something you can do...
PETA is asking that we not buy products that are Made In China. This may be difficult, but I know that I want to sends a strong message that this is WRONG! Please boycott Chinese products. We do have power as Consumers and I hope that you will all use it.

SHANGHAI, China — China slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies, sparking unusually pointed criticism in state media Tuesday and an outcry from animal-rights activists.

Health experts said only 3 percent of dogs are vaccinated against rabies and more than 2,000 people die of the disease each year.

The five-day slaughter in Mouding county in Yunnan province in southwestern China ended Sunday and spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, state media reported.

Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot, the Shanghai Daily newspaper reported. Led by the county police chief, killing teams entered villages at night creating noise to get dogs barking, then beat the animals to death, the reports said.

Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their own dogs before the teams were sent in, they said.

The killings were widely discussed on the Internet, with both legal scholars and animal-rights activists criticizing them as crude and cold-blooded. The World Health Organization said more emphasis needed to be placed on rabies prevention.

The official newspaper Legal Daily blasted the killings as an "extraordinarily crude, cold-blooded and lazy way for the government to deal with epidemic disease."

"Wiping out the dogs shows these government officials didn't do their jobs right in protecting people from rabies in the first place," the newspaper, published by the central government's Politics and Law Committee, said in an editorial in its online edition.

The killings prompted calls for a boycott of Chinese products from the activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, whose president, Ingrid Newkirk, said the group had canceled all orders of merchandise it sells that is made in China. Mouding county officials defended the slaughter in a region where about 360 of the 200,000 residents suffered dog bites this year, with three people reportedly dying of rabies, including a 4-year-old girl.

"With the aim to keep this horrible disease from people, we decided to kill the dogs," Li Haibo, a spokesman for the county government, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Calls to county government offices went unanswered Tuesday. Located in mountains about 1,240 miles southwest of Shanghai, Mouding is famed for its Buddhist shrines.

Unlike in the West, where dogs have long been cherished as companions or helpmates, dogs have rarely had an easy time in China. Dog meat is eaten throughout the country, revered as a tonic in winter and a restorer of virility in men.

Following the communist seizure of power in 1949, dog ownership was condemned as a bourgeois affectation and canines were hunted as pests. Attitudes have softened in recent years, although urban Chinese are still subject to strict rules on the size of their pets and must pay steep registration fees.

About 70 percent of rural households now keep dogs, according to the Chinese Center of Disease Control and Prevention, and increased rates of ownership have been tied to a surge in the number of rabies cases. It said there were 2,651 reported deaths from the disease in 2004, the last year for which data were available."

My friend Robin just sent me an e-mail urging her friends to become proactive about this subject. Here is what she wrote...
I am outraged and have pledged not to buy, support, or endorse China/Chinese products. Please take a minute and write a letter and voice your outrage as well. This is 2006 and this country needs to be put on notice. These are precious animals...Please take a minute from the luxury of your comfortable home and think for one second what these dogs go thru, then get out a pen and write a letter, it takes but a couple of minutes...
