| ![]() We were the first in our "neighborhood" to get an indoor bath room. we had a wood burning cook stove, coal/wood heating stove in the living room, 5 of us shared a bed room (baby slep in mom & dads room), made our own butter (taking turns shaking the jar), crank ice cream maker(winter time we made snow icecream) no running water(took that straight out of the ground), wringer washer (sat on the porch), bath once a week with rain water collected in barrels in the wash tub that we also used for rinsing clothes and food canning. grew a garden for just about everything. had one cow(for milk), 2 work horses(used for plow)a couple of cats and one coon dog. we didn't have kindergarden, my first grade was in a one room school house. second grade we started going to the city school.(the old school house closed.) we did have a phone tho... 3 party line. I remember dad bringing home our first tv. b&w. all my dresses was made from feed sacks.(as well as the curtains, table cloths, dish towels, etc.)(and was made on a tredle(sp) machine). if you watch the coal miners daughter, the way she was brought up was identical to the way we lived. Now after reading all of this, I want you all to remember that it is not because I am old....it is because of the area we lived in was stuck where they had to pipe in the sunshine. My mother and father was old fashioned and we didn't have the modern conveniences even if they did exist. My guish, my first trip to a dairy queen, I dressed up thinking we were going to a beauty pageant.

I also had a "carpet rake" for my shag carpet. It sounds kinda' dumb now, but we used it so the carpeting wouldn't get matted down. Oh!!! I remember Mrs. Beasley and Buffy and Jody!!!! My neighbor got one and I was sooo jealous. Come to think of it.....my neighbors always got everything that I wanted. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I was born in 1956 and boy let me tell you growing up like yourself there were many sleepless nights. We had a fan in the room and it was blowing hot air. Man how did we survive...lol like you mention kids and adults couldnt survive anymore. I do to remember walking to school in deep snow but I had boots. No one had anything back then but we were happy... Gina | |

And what about those stupid roller skates with metal wheels that you strapped on to your shoes? They kept on falling off and making you fall. The metal wheels made the most horrible sound and look out if you hit a pebble! I remember when we got our first cassette player/recorder. It was a black box that had push down buttons. I remember mom made us talk to grandma by recording us and mailing it to grandma instead of writing letters. That would be the 70's version of voice mail!

Donating YT 14K Club Member | ![]() I was born in 1973. Some of the things I remember from the 70s...gas was like 70 something cents a gallon. We had an 8 track player in mom's Ford Pinto. Our couch was the ugliest thing I can remember...really small checkered pattern. Holly Hobby was big and everyone carried a tin lunch box to school...mine was Holly Hobby. During the summer, we'd get up, eat cereal and then ride our bikes until the sun came down. We didn't have to worry about crazies out there (too much). The lady across the street became my adopted grandma (she never had kids of her own). Anyway, I remember being 5 years old and riding my bike to the gas station at the end of the street to buy a 5 cent pack of gum. We had a color t.v. and my parents had that thing till I was almost finished with elementary school. You had to get up to change the channel and the knobs were round dials that you had to turn. We could walk to the park and spend hours there and never worried about some pervert watching us. We walked to school and back home. Mom didn't have rollers so for my long hair, she would roll my hair around a tube sock and I'd sleep in them. Hurt like the dickens but oh, the curls I'd have the next morning. Wow...this whole thread brings back memories! ![]()

| ![]() Wow this is a great thread and brings me to memory lane. Tv shows when I was little. Romper Room, Captain Kangaroo, Electric Company, ZOOM. You gals haven't mention this and I hate to be the one to mention it. But remember the dreaded Kotex belts!! No stick tab on the pads!! Shoot tampons weren't even around I don't think! Ugh! Remember the ugly gym uniforms we had to wear!! No digital watches! People pierced their ears themselves with icecubes! I used to have a Chrissy Doll too. Loved her!!

Do any of you remember the dog/cat food called Puss-N-Boots? It was made for both dogs & cats! We also didn't have dryer sheets or liquid laundry detergent. Tupperwear was like a luxury item and how my mom would get mad if dad used it in the garage or lost a lid! And plastic dishes! They sold sets of plastic dishes with matching bowls & coffee cups. It had like daisys or autumn leaves on them. It left knife marks and you could never get the stains out.

| ![]() that is right about the tupperware. I can just remember tupperware and avon. Now there is Party lite, Pampered Chef, Premier Jewelry, etc. I remember all the houses had 1 car garages, because families only had 1 car because mom's didn't work. How many of you had one of those clocks that look like a sun? Some of you may know what I mean. Lawn mowers weren't motorized when I was born. No edgers except scissors. Also my first 2 years of elementary school, girls could not wear pants! We also could go home for lunch if you lived close enough. Oh those were the days!

![]() I remember the "sanitary" belts.. by my time, they had invented panties with little hooks in them...I swear the best day of my life was NOT having to use pads, just tampons. Of course, when you are beginning to learn to use tampons...you'd use 32 of the box of 40 getting one in properly. And that page with instructions and pictures...didn't help you one bit. ![]()
