| I really doubt it's a rabid raccoon. But I do agree they are nocturnal and there could be something wrong with it. I've told this story before but will repeat it. My sister had a raccoon on her roof several years ago in the daytime. Their neighbor is involved in wild life rescue and came over to help. She said it's very common for raccoons to have DISTEMPER. So IMO it's more likely this might be the case. Did it look well? I just googled searched and came up with this link. It's seems there has been an outbreak in TX.......City of Lakeway, TX - Official Website - Signs of Distemper in Raccoons

| I read the article. Thank you! It didn't seem sick but that might not mean anything. I am freaking out right now. My dogs are vaccinated but still! I will definitely make some noise and give it time to scatter before I let my dogs out.

| Yes, distemper is a highly contagious virus that is similar to mumps in humans. It is fatal in animals so it's very important that our pets are properly vaccinated for distemper. They dog Bella was just a puppy and they had literally just walked in the house from picking her up at the breeder. She was outside with my sister on their deck when the raccoon was on their roof acting sick. The first thing the neighbor told them was it could be distemper and to take Bella inside. Luckily, she had several vaccines already prior to coming home and she was fine. But it's a little frightening to think it's that easily transmitted and how some people do not vaccine properly to insure immunity.

| Quote: Thanks! Too funny and what a picky eater! My cats allow the coon to eat like it's part of the pack! Raccoons are such little thieves. I once had one try to steal the entire container of cat food from our barn but the container got stuck in the fence. I'll bet that little critter sat there for hours trying to get it to go through.

| Growing up, we had a large in ground swimming pool. In the corner of the yard, there were bananna trees growing to hide the electric pole. At night, a racoon would come, pick banannas, and go stand on the steps in the pool and wash the banannas, enjoy his meal, and then leave! Momma removed the bananna trees and planted flowering shrubs.....and the racoon moved on! |
