Yes, distemper is a highly contagious virus that is similar to mumps in humans. It is fatal in animals so it's very important that our pets are properly vaccinated for distemper. They dog Bella was just a puppy and they had literally just walked in the house from picking her up at the breeder. She was outside with my sister on their deck when the raccoon was on their roof acting sick. The first thing the neighbor told them was it could be distemper and to take Bella inside. Luckily, she had several vaccines already prior to coming home and she was fine. But it's a little frightening to think it's that easily transmitted and how some people do not vaccine properly to insure immunity.
